Hey all, just bought a new-to-me 08 3500 6.7 auto short box. Love it, very happy. I'm going to change the oil and fuel filter, got the kit from my local cummins shop. Is there any trick or special thing to know about a fuel filter change in these ones? It looks a little more involved than my 02 5.9....

filter housing spins off. I remove the electrical connector for the WIF sensor first. Then from top with oil filter wrench I remove the filter housing. There is a harness connector that maybe in your way. Use a screw driver and release the two locks then you can move out of the way. Reach down with filter wrench and remove filter. Not very difficult. Some people connect a longer hose to the fuel drain and run it into plastic bucket or fuel can. Less mess to clean off your floor that way.

The housing drain valve (3) serves two purposes. One is to partially drain the filter housing of excess water. The other is to partially drain the housing for fuel filter or heater element replacement.


Install filter

Fuel Filter: CAUTIONo not pre-fill the fuel filter with fuel. Severe damage to fuel system and injection system components may result. a. The engine has a self-priming low-pressure fuel system. bump starter let pump run until it times out then bump once more that way the fuel filter housing will fill with fuel and you don't need to crank engine over and run down your battery and burn out your starter.
b. Lubricate new fuel filter O-ring with clean engine oil.
c. Position new fuel filter/canister assembly (1) to housing.
d. Rotate fuel filter/canister assembly (1) until it comes to a hard stop.
e. Tighten the filter element an additional half-inch of rotation.
f. Connect WIF sensor electrical connector and ensure connector locking tab is seated on the WIF sensor body (5).
g. Attach drain hose (4) to drain valve (3).

BTW, when I change my oil, should I reset the "service oil" indicator on the EVIC display? It's not coming up now but since I don't know when it will, if I do the reset procedure will it reset it anyways?

Yes reset the ovhd message so it can start counting again.
Also look at changing your air filter, trans filters, ccv filter and doing the egr service if not deleted. These are mileage based iitems so chech the owners manual for when they're needed.

Ok well I got the oil changed, didn't get the fuel filter changed. The 1/2" square driver socket in the bottom is a bit rounded and I didn't want to put an oil filter strap wrench on it, too chicken, the manual warns against it. I'm sure it would come with a bit of coaxing, I just don't know how much...I'm trying to get the service records from the old owner through dealership, should know more Monday. All the other services mentioned I'll look into having done, good advice...

I use a rubber strap wrench on mine and have never had a problem. It puts a more even pressure on the canister. That square drive on the bottom is just about useless.

Same here. Have to use the strap wrench. Worrks great.

I take the wheel well down and get it from the side... Wheel well only has a few screws and is easy to drop it down.

Going in through the wheel well is the easiest way to do it. Tried it from under the truck when I first got it, before I found out how easy it is to remove the wheelwell. Not a fun experience ! I miss the stock fuel filter that was on my 2001. Now that was easy.
