Can you Gravity Bleed the Brakes?

I just replaced my right rear caliper. I opened up the bleeder valve & wanted to let gravity do it's thing. No fluid came out. I had my son pump the brake while I opened & closed the bleeder valve. Fluid came out on the third or fourth pump. Everything seemed normal. I then opened up the bleeder get the final bit of air out (I always seem to do a better bleed by gravity bleeding) but once again, no fluid came out.

Does this seem normal? Does the ABS on these trucks not allow the gravity bleeding to work? Should I just bleed it a couple of more times by pumping the brake & calling it good?

Gravity bleeding is a waste of time. Your best bet is to buy a pressure bleeder and be done with it in 10 minutes. It's worth every penny.

I gravity bleed all the time. Perfect for beer drinking while waiting. Just make sure you remove the cap off the reservoir.

Or vacuum. I pull a vacuum on an old 30# refrigerant cylinder and then suck the new fluid thru. I end up with all the durty fluid in the tank and no mess anywhere. Craig

X2 for vacuum bleeding. Have used both pressure and vacuum bleeding in the past and found vacuum to be far less hassle.

I picked up a handheld vacuum pump from one of the local auto supplies, and immediately wished I had gotten one years ago.

Ditto that. Vacuum makes things easy.

did you get it bled? question... is bleeder valve at the top or the bottom of the caliper. if bleeder is at the bottom, you have the left side caliper installed on the right side.
