I'm finally shopping for a pyrometer and other gauges, and trying to get them as cheap as I can...

My truck is going to be used entirely for long distance hauling, so I'm not planning on turning it up more than it needs to be - but some previous owner already did turn it up (I'm pretty sure) and basically I don't want to melt anything. Looking on ebay the impression that I get is that any pyro gauge just operates off of two wires from any probe/sender, they're not necessarily a matched pair. So if I find a good price on a probe and a good price on a separate gauge, will that work? Any particularly good brand? Again, I'm not gonna be pushing the limits of the truck.

I decided awhile ago from reading the board here that the kind of tach that operates off the fuel lines from the pump would be the thing to go with since my engine doesn't have any kind of crank sensor and the alternator ones seemed kind of iffy ... again, is there a good brand?

I'm going to get at least one trans temp sensor, maybe two, and oil and coolant temp gauges also (the kind with actual numbers on 'em). What I mostly need advice on is oil and fuel PRESSURE, like what kind to get and where (and how) to install the senders.

Another thing is the speedometer... it works, but the odometer doesn't, and since I find the 10mph start speed pretty silly and I'm replacing all the other gauges with numbered ones anyway, is it reasonably possible to just replace it entirely with an aftermarket one? I'm not so worried about the mph being off by a couple, but I do need an odometer that's at least as accurate as a stock one would be.

As far as the pyro goes they are really picky about the length of the wires that come off of the probe. I would be careful buying one off of ebay because they don't usually tell you if it is just the gauge or the brain box that goes with it.

For the Tach IIRC you can get one from ISSPRO and you can also buy a sensor for your crank from them.

Fix your odometer. I would think that would be easier than replacing your factory cluster with all the ID10T lights, etc, and MUCH cheaper.

Genosgarage.com is a great place to buy gauges. ISSPRO, DI-Pricol, Autometer, Westach, etc. I have isspros and I love them. Their customer service is great too. I just made a 4-pillar gauge pod for my truck, but you can buy a 2-gauge pillar pod for your truck. I'm not sure which steering column you have but if it is the later style you can buy a single pod that goes on the column. This can all be purchased at genosgarage.com.

I am using Auto Meter on everything but the tach which was part of the original Banks set. I run my manual trans and rear diff off one guage. I use a SPDT guage to read which ever one I want. I also read my aux and main fuel tanks the same way - off the factory guage. You can buy two senders to read in and out temps on an auto tranny using a SPDT switch.

For the odo, just my opinion, I suggest getting a gps. They can be had quite reasonably anymore and you get accurate mph, multiple trip settings etc etc. Makes hand calculating mileage very accurate, despite tire size. With a non-intercooled engine, I would not skimp on the pyro. Get the best setup you can afford.

Nope. I thought they'd be a good deal too, but most of the stuff I've read about them is bad. Better to save for Isspro/Autometer/...?

Is there any way to test a flywheel-pickup-type tach sensor? I remembered that I have one that came attached to the flywheel housing of a 12v from a school bus, but I don't have a gauge yet. Might as well see if I can make it work before I buy a whole new pickup/etc.

Ive used faze, sunpro, and glow shift gauges in all type of applications. I always use electric gauges not mechanicals. One thing i notice is they all read different so now the only gauge i use is AutoMeter. Might be a little more pricey but at least i know the reading are efficent and accurate.
