whats wrong with my truck now...
ok..took it to dealer last week. when i went back to get it...(my wife went by and paid them and they locked the keys up in it) i had to jump the truck off. i think the lights were left on, but not sure. anyway...i have had to jump it off a couple times this week...lows in the 30s high 50s. my battery tester is saying the batteries are good. have good cables with no corrosion. still truck will not crank...some times it will barely turn over...then it will crank on second try. when it is idling the volt meter will jump from 8-12 volts and head lights will dim and go bright, but once you take off it wont do it anymore. wondering if they took a ground loose some where?? also got these trouble codes today:
P-0513-Invalid Skin Key
P-0471-Exhaust Pressure Sensor 1 Performance
P-0489-EGR Control Circuit Low
P-2262-Turbocharger Boost Pressure Not Detected-Mechanical
P-2509-ECM/PCM Power Input Signal Intermittent
what does invalid skin key mean and can you explain the mechanical part of the turbo boost.
also gonna order a 4" tbe exhause tonight...which would you choose!
thanks

The volt meter moving is more then likely the grid heater running, I believe they draw more amps then the alternator can produces at idle, hence the dimming effect(heaters cycle on and off), when you take off the alternator produces enough power to run them, or the engine is warm enough not to need them. From the description you gave sounds like bad batteries. I would make sure the posts are good and clean. Also if you have a mulitmeter, check the voltage of the batteries, and check them again while you have some one cranking the truck over. Post results.

P2262 is a turbo boost not detected mechanical. Which means your turbo sliding nozzle is sooted up. The dealership needs to run a P2262 test which will determine if your truck just needs the PCM updated or turbo clean or a complete turbo replacement.
P0471
Remove the exhaust pressure sensor and inspect the tube from the exhaust manifold to the sensor for any obstructions such as excessive soot / carbon. Clean out the tube as necessary. Also inspect the orifice / chamber in the cylinder head between the pressure tube and the exhaust pressure sensor for any obstruction. Clean out the orifice / chamber as necessary.
P0489 Your EGR valve needs replacing or cleaning
Remove and clean the EGR Valve with Mopar EGR system cleaner, if code returns replace the EGR valve.
P2509 is low voltage re-charge and check your battery's clean battery connections.
You need to update your PCM and CCN to latest flash also has J35 recall been done.
Is the DTC P0513 still active? Yes then replace the Ignition Key, If code is stored most likely cause by low battery voltage.
You have a lot going on with your truck, what's your mileage? covered under Cummins warranty till 100K miles or 5 years. I'm just curious what did the dealership fix or not fix in your case?

wow...holy crap!!
truck is 08 model, 72K. truck has rebuilt title so, no warranty. they did the j35 recall when it was in the shop. they recd desoot of trubo/egr last time in. $1100 for it, which i think is crazy. i ordered full deletes and a smarty jr. hopefully will get to put it on this weekend. does the truck have a system that keeps the batteries from being run down? i think they left a light on in the cab and thats what killed the batts...doubt i can get them to replace them.
thanks.

You can order the turbo clean kit for much less then that and do it yourself. EGR delete will take care of sooting issue. You will need to pick up 800 CCA battery better to replace them both at same time. If turbo already has cleaning port it's really simple to do. read the TSB

Have the batteries load tested. My '07.5 had one of the batteries going bad and had to be jump started a couple times for no appearant reason. It was also throwing codes on a regular basis. Once I replaced the batteries everything went back to normal and no more codes.

truck is at steelership now...i also have a vibration in fron end. spent $1300 last week on it and still there...back to other problem.
went to leave work today. it cranked up but wouldnt go above 1000 rpm. it was running real rough and would die if i didnt feather throttle. i cranked it several times...5-6 maybe more. after all that dying and re cranking it finally ran right and got it home. when i got home it wasnt throwing any codes. took it to steelership and before i locked it up i rechecked it and the same codes were showing. so maybe its just the batteries...but it stumps me because it cranked so many times today..what gives..will report back tomorrow!

Actually, it was probably the previous owner that was the problem. Dodge is what brought the cummuns to dummies like myself.

Well that contributed a whole lot.

I think you have several issues going on here. You very well may have a bad battery and that will cause all kinds of issues. I had a bad passenger battery, which still showed a full twelve volts. Would crank when it was warm, but in colder morning when the grid heater would cycle it would drop below 8v and cause all kinds of codes. It would even reset my overhead and trip odometer. Changed em both out and no issues since.
On top of that, I think with no warranty and all, its high time to delete. Youll be a lot better off.

blake,
i too think its the batts. i talked to the dealer today. they claim that the dpf was stopped completely up causing it not to crank. they took the oxygen sensor off so it would cranks.
2 ?'S... is it possible for the truck not to crank because the dpf is full?
when the ecm limits the power due to emmissions problems(limp mode). how fast or how many rpms will it turn.
blake,
have full deletes in the garage. including the ccv mod. have a 4" tbe on order. it wont be here til after the weekend. so as soon as i get my truck back the deletes will go on...im gonna take a sawzall to the inlet of the dpf and run it like that til i get my exhaust.

Actually, I would not recommend doing any of that. Hang in there.
