VE to VP44?

I was reading this thread, https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=60488 and it got me to thinking, if you could replace a p7100 with a VE, could also replace a VE with a VP44? It seems that the 24v trucks are able to put out some pretty big hp#`s, and the pump is a rotary design. Am I totally out in left field here? Just wondering.

Sorry to chimes in, but here's what i have to say.. From what i can read all over the forum, VP44 seems not to last compare to the good ol VE. You can reach 500+ with a VE, it has been done. The reason why i want to swap a VE instead of P7100, it that the VE is more versatile than the Inline.. A VE EDC is quite easy to control compare to the Vp44. VP pump has a computer built in the pump itself ( on the top ) controled via a CAN bus. I don't have any vehicule with this type of pump so i can't make experientation..

I don't think is a project for 'newbie', but it can be done. I'll keep peoples who are interested informed.

Cheers,
Marc/

There's a couple of reasons it not a good idea and there are a couple of mechanical/electrical challanges.

First the VP44 has a terrible reputation, electronics like to die with no warning leaving one stranded at the worst possible time/place.

The other issues have to do with the crank sensor and/or cam sensor. There's two different flavors of VP44 24 valve engines. 98.5 to 2000 and 2001 to 2002. The earlier engines have a tone ring bolted to the crank shaft and a sensor hole down by the starter, the also have a cam sensor, but that is not the primary one it uses. The later 2001-2002 engine eliminated the crank sensor and used a different tone ring bolted to the back of the camshaft. You could technically swap all the engine management and front cover stuff off a 2001-2002 and have a custom set of lines made and it would probably work, but again WHY??

If you wanted a VP44 powered 12 valve it would probably be easier to swap the pistons and head, then have a set of custom lines bent up for it. And anyone who has had to replace a VP44 will ask WHY???

It is a big upgrade to ditch the VP-44 and put a P-pump on a 24 valve. It would probably be a better upgrade to put a P-pump on a 1st gen. If you want to get involved in that much electronics you would probably be better off to just swap a common rail engine, or a 24 valve for that matter, into your first gen. Just my 2 cents.
