TX DTR #8--August Meet
I can imagine. I drive to the east side of Grapevine 3 or 4 days a week. It's only 30 miles one way, but it seems like a long 30 miles. Going at 10:00 AM is not too bad, but coming back at 7:00 PM usually puts me on 190 to miss the 635 mess.
Yeah I have about the same length to drive myself. We are about to "rebid" on days off/shift etc. at work (for January changeover)........so im contemplating if I want to work a "day" type schedule and play in the traffic on 75 everyday coming and going.
With my current schedule (working evenings) I can make great time to work and back. Especially coming back!Im still on my original brakes at 117K miles. I bet if I get into a stop/go traffic schedule that will wear out a set of brake pads in a hurry. And waste an extra hour or two out of my day sitting in traffic.
The upside, is I would have a more normal schedule like everybody else and not want to stay up all night...

..
shoot. I got you guys beat. I drive from Saginaw to Bridgeport just to get in a Peterbuilt and DRIVE wherever work wants me to. Oh, and I'm on call 24-7...
You think traffic is bad, try pulling a 63' trailer with 15' of overhang...nobody lets you in..

I get your point. But there aren't any traffic lights on 75 either. They just never make enough lanes for all the traffic and they wasted 2 potential lanes by building that stupid plastic pylon HOV lane crap that nobody uses or illegally uses.
..
I've worked all possible schedules. My take on them is this...
Day shift is slower, maybe a little boring........but you have a more normal life away from work. You are on every body else's schedule which is good but it also means heavy traffic too. But it's also harder to get good days off because of seniority. I, obviously, prefer SS off which are dang near impossible to get at my station because the dinosaurs won't retire...

Evenings is fun! Usually younger officers, more energetic...more to do too. Shift just flies by and before you know it, it's time to go home. But the rest of the world is off enjoying life...while im at work. But im number 2 on my watch...so all the holidays and weekends off are mine at least.
Overnight shift is somewhat fun for the first 2 maybe 3 hours. Then it's slow and boring. The food sux.......What are you having? Ihop or Ihop? Then you try to sleep in the day when the rest of the world is up and working. Phone rings, wakes you up. You are always somewhat tired....because you just can't rest. The weekends roll around....and you want to sleep during the day....unless you flip flop...and keep your body clock all upset. Upside, you avoid the Texas summer heat and you are off in the evenings!
........
These days......I guess im just glad to have a job...working any shift! and glad I have the opportunity to choose among the above scenarios.

decisions, decisions.
