muffler law???
muffler law???
Does anyone know for a fact if it is Texas law that pickups have to have a muffler in the exhaust system? It seems there is a cummins hating highway patrol in palo pinto county
I believe the law does require a muffler. I tried to get my truck inspected last November here in Stephenville and one place would not pass it. But I went to a different place and it passed. I guess it just depends on where you are and if someone is itching to give you a ticket.

Texas transportation code, section 547.604
"§ 547.604. MUFFLER REQUIRED. (a) A motor vehicle shall
be equipped with a muffler in good working condition that
continually operates to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
(b) A person may not use a muffler cutout, bypass, or
similar device on a motor vehicle.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995."
Although I heard a turbo counts as a muffler in the state. Heard that on here though. Couldn't find anything in the code.

Problem with that code is that our trucks vent crankcase gasses into the air...so there must be a different set of laws...I know I have read that it states somewhere a "turbo or other muffling device." I need to find it.

This must be talking about V-8 Diesels.
I may have to put a straight flow muffler ahead of my system.
It pretty much comes down to who you take it to be inspected by, and if it's inspected without a muffler then that's your defense if you get pulled over. "It passed State Inspection".

FWIW i have never been pulled over but did convince a county sheriff that my stack box was a muffler ...
always said i would put a (brand of muffler) label on my stack box if i ever found one made of metal ...

I think that warning he gave you for the window tint being too dark is bogus. I tinted my windows this summer and read the regulations for how dark (tint %) each window can be. I'm almost positive that the side windows to to the rear of the driver and passenger side windows have no limit on how dark they can be. And I'm almost positive that the back window has no limit either.

Your turbo is considered a muffling device by the state of Texas, this doesn't stop you from getting a ticket for being to loud.
Ya brady is an A$$. He pulled me over for speeding, then while I was sitting there ideling, he looked under my truck to see if I had a muffler, and gave me a ticket for that. Its mineral wells that makes such a big deal about it. I've been pulled over by state troopers in plenty of other places and no problems at all. Its a 250 dollar ticket in mineral wells, and when I called about it, the judge was even worse than the cop and said don't even try to get it dropped or dismissed cause it aint happenin. He said " we're tired of those loud diesels coming through here without mufflers and we're gonna put a stop to it". And I tried the "well it passed inspection" excuse, and that didn't work either. He said even if I put a muffler on my truck he wouldn't drop the ticket. So now I just kill my truck if I get pulled over.
