What makes a 2500 HD?

Getting ready to order some timbrens for my truck, and the one of the kits is for a 2500 HD only. What is that? I just looked under my truck, the rear has 4 leafs, then a small spacer (2 very short leafs stacked), then 2 overload leafs. Does that make it a HD? No badging or anything to specify.

Yes, I have a '98 2500 HD

Standard 2500 is 7500 GVWR, 2500 HD is 8800 GVWR

Makes a difference in a lot of the driveline, suspension and brake parts.

The HD has the extra set of overload springs a few inches higher than the main pack. I can't remember if the rear sway bar was part of the HD package or the towing package - been a while since I spec'd out that bad boy!

My door sticker says 8800lbs, and the springs are as you said. Sounds like I've got the HD, didn't know there was a difference. Thanks for the info, that's what I needed to know!

Wonder if it makes a difference in shocks. I just ordered 4 bilstein 5100's, hope they fit. The only options were for 2500 2wd or 4wd, maybe they'll be OK.

There was several that were not a tow prep group and only had the standard springs with no over loads and no rear sway bar an thus they had the 7500 GVWR and not the 8800 GVWR.

Now I am confused, I have a 8800# gvwr. But my truck doesn't have overloads or a rear swaybar. I thought that trucks with the camping package came with overloads and swaybar.

My 96 has both the overloads and rear sway bar. I do know it came with the camper package if that makes a difference

I am the origional owner and I have no overloads, no swaybar, but it is 8800# rated...I also thought those two things were part of the camper group...at least that's the way it looked when I ordered it.

Hmmmm. Yeah, I've got a sway bar on there. Must be the camper package or something. Wish Dodge would clarify.

yeah i'm thinking the camper package is what adds the overloads and swaybar.

My truck was not equipped with the camper package, so therefore no swaybar or overloads.

But one more question has anyone ever seen a 2500 CTD truck with a 7500# gvwr?

The camper package adds overloads , and a rear sway bar , the tow package includes trailer wiring, and a receiver hitch.

I do not have the sway bar or overloads and my GVW is 8800 lbs. I have Firestone air bags and I have it licenced and insured for 11,000 lbs GVW. The DOT was going to let me go as high as 12,500 GVW. But still if you look you will see that all cummins powered Dodges are classes as HD.

My '98 2500HD 4x4, which I ordered from the factory, was optioned like this:

"Heavy-Duty Service Group
136 amp alternator
750 amp battery
maximum engine cooling (that's a bit vague )
auxiliary automatic transmission oil cooler
transfer case skid plate
this package is standard on 3500 models, included with V-10 or Diesel

Trailer Tow Group
Heavy-duty flasher
Class IV trailer hitch receiver
7-lead wiring harness with fifth-wheel take-out
requires Heavy-Duty Service Group
requires rear-step bumper
not available with V-6 engine ( )

Auxiliary Rear Suspension Group
auxiliary rear springs
rear stabilizer bar
Note 3 - 2500HD and 3500 pickup models only"

Dodge rated the tongue weight at 900#, and since it had the 47RE the max trailer weight rating is 13,200# and the GCWR is 19K#.

JKM had it right. Camper package included overload springs, and rear sway bar, it's how I ordered mine, along with trailer tow group.
