Not For Hire means you don't need an MC number . You are still commercial if you are hauling your own property wih some type of compensation involved . If you carry a lawnmower or chainsaw somewhere and get paid to use it you are commercial .

That's good advise guys, thanks for the info....so pay out my rear for Dot #'s, inspections...blah,blah, blah or loose money hauling it to the ripoff artists in Nashville? Or maybe just save until I have a pile a monster truck can't drive over and schedule a doctors appointment in the morning on a weekday??

It isn't the DOT number that has the big expense . It's the MC number which isn't needed if you aren't hauling anybody's stuff but your own . A DOT physical costs $40 or $50 and is good for 2 years unless you have high blood pressure ( higher than 140/90 without medication ) . If your blood pressure is over that they give you a 3 month certificate to get it down but after that you need a yearly physical . For the DOT inspection on the truck and trailer you can buy the forms cheap at a truckstop and do the inspection yourself if you are qualified . Otherwise it will cost you around $50 per inspection .
