I have a 21' travel trailer (weighs 5000-5500 lbs with about 750 lbs tongue weight) that I have been towing with a GMC Yukon using an equalizer hitch that provides weight distribution and some sway control. Towing has been excellent. I have just ordered a 2010 Ram 2500 which will become my new tow vehicle (I don't need the truck but I just wanted a diesel). My question is with such a heavy duty tow vehicle should I continue to use all the hitch components (torsion bars etc.) or just hook the trailer to the ball on the truck and go. It is no big deal either way as I have the hitch, but slightly easier to not use the weight distribution/anti-sway function. I was thinking that possibly with the stiff suspension etc. of this truck it would be best not to use the weight distribution. Any thoughts? thks, Ed

 

Since you already have the hitch, continue using it. It is recommended anyways.

 

I run just about the same set-up. You still benefit from the hitches work regardless of TV....The wieght still gets distributed and you still have good sway control.

I say use it.

 

I would be surprised if your new factory truck hitch can actually carry 750lbs without the WD.... legally.

 

Have you ever got an actually hitch weight check? Usually a TT is about 12% on the tongue. 750 sounds a little much on a 5500 pound trailer.

 

I have a 27' travel trailer that has a 725lb hitch weight, and I pull it with my Ram 2500. Do you need the weight distribution hitch? The simple answer is no. My truck on sets down a few inches with the trailer weight on it. That being said, I do use a weight distibution hitch and a sway bar. Makes the truck and trailer act more as a "single unit", if that makes any sense.

 

You already have it, and it works, so why not keep using it? I have a 26' enclosed trailer and I can tell you there is a huge difference in how the trailer pulls with and without the WDH. I can also tell you that if you don't have it adjusted right it can be worse than not using it at all...
