I have a 2 axle 14k equipment trailer and have noticed for quite a while that most of the tires have ballooned out in the center of the tread, while the outside edges seem to be at reg level. It reminds you of a broken belt, but rather all way around the tire, and all tires have some level of this wear. They are not dry rotted, and are about 4 years old.

ANyone know what causes this? I have had enclosed trailers over the years, and never had any do that.

 

Our cattle trailer did that, and it was broken belts. They were a cheaper no-name tire. 1 had a blowout a while back, and the other 2 ended up with broken belts, so we replaced them all with Firestones, and have had no problem since. The tires are overloaded weight wise from time to time.

 

I would guess by the 14000 lb capacity of the trailer, you either have load range D or E tires on the trailer since you truck shares at least 1400-2000 lbs of the load.

If your not running a full load on the trailer all the time, and your running max inflation in the trailer tires, after four years I would expect them to have less tread in the middle or worse.

I don't really know what they look like, but, my dually rears use to wear out in the middle long before the outsides. Thats because I always had to much air in the tires. I now run 55 in the rears and that problem has gone away with this set of tires.

I noticed one of the tires on my 5th wheel looked like that, but it was a different brand than the others. I thought after this last trip of the season, I will replace it in the spring...

The tire had other plans, and exploded out on the highway...

 

The tires would be over inflated and or too much weight. Running on the outside of tire is underinflated.
