Travelling Alberta to Arizona to pick up toyhauler
Travelling Alberta to Arizona to pick up toyhauler
I won an auction on CrankyApe for a small toyhauler (Extreme Mega-lite 19KT) so I'll be travelling all the way from Edmonton Alberta to Arizona City and back over the next week to 10 days.
I'm taking I15 all the way down through MT and UT, then crossing over to 89 through La Verkin, Page, Flagstaff then through Phoneix to Arizona City.
Figure I'll stop around Great Falls the first night, then Murray Utah where DLUX fab is going to do my whole frontend including freehub conversion, XRF balljoints, u-joints, etc.
Then I'll stay overnight around Phoenix and come back through Moab to do some mountain biking

Any advice on some good (ie: clean) cheap hotels on the way down? What about a good RV place around Arizona City that could pack the wheel bearings and check the trailer brakes for me?
The trailer is only 4000# dry so I may tow it back with just my regular ball, ie: no equalizer hitch. I would like to stop at a good RV place and look into buying an equalizing hitch setup though. Tow vehicle is my 2001.5 shortbox quadcab diesel, 6spd with RV275 injector and a Comp box. It has the camper and trailer packages so pretty stiff in the rear end.
Thanks for any advice, looking forward to this trip!

MMMM, I'm jealous. I have to wait till Oct for my Moab trip. When I went down last I just pulled into whatever motel/hotel looked good along the way when I was ready to stop.
This year we are taking the RV with us(did the cabin thing last time) and since we'll be just stopping for the night we plan to stay in Walmart parking lots along the way. Once in Moab we'll be staying at the Canyon Lands Campground. Its a nice campground and right in town so you can walk to lots of restaurants and things. They fill up fast this time of year so it would be wise to call ahead and make reservations.
Have fun!!!

Dont be nervous, I drive from northern BC to Havasu for the winter every year, and tow a 32 ft travel trailer, the only thing I suggest is a good GPS, I use the tom tom xl340s and love it, going thru Salt lake city will be a real experiance, lots of traffic, try and stay in the truck lanes going thru big cities, and stay at there speed, that way the traffic flows around you, nothing worse than someone towing and switching lanes all the time. good luck.
A freind and i drove from Manitoba to Yuma last May 1 to pick up his 35 ft camper, 5th wheel. We made it down non stop in 32 hrs. Could have shaved off a couple of hours if we had not listtened to my GPS. It took us through 89 south of Livingstone. Of course this was at 9 pm. White knuckles some times. Really glad we were not towing anything. Stick to the Interstates and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the comments. I'll probably stick on I15 through SLC and tough out the construction, unless it's really bad and someone can detail an alternate route. I have a GPS unit but never installed it yet so putting it in tomorrow. And Madhat I really appreciate your contact # thank you kindly.
Canyonlands RV Park
Just got back from Moab on a Jeep trip. I'll also redcommend the Canyonlands RV Park. We stay there everytime we go to Moab, at least twice ayear. Would suggest you make reservations, Moab is really busy this time of year and this park is very popular due its location.
I found driving thru SLC not bad when I went down, there was a period of about 30min that was quite congested but since I was going striaght thru I just stayed my lane and went with the flow. The interstate kind of goes around the outskirts of SLC so you don't have to do much lane changing.
Might be different with the construction...

I would never do that.
Seriously, its nice to know there are contacts out there when you are out on a long trip. You just never know when someone else will have the resources uhh err diesel truck resources that are needed out on the road. Parts, directions, tools etc.

Yeah it's really nice having emergency contacts in case something happens, especially on your first big trip. Another member from Utah PM'd me his phone number so I'm pretty well covered now.
