Trailer Wires
Trailer Wires
I'm getting a new trailer to carry my K-5 for off road use.
I want to wire it correct so this is the way I see it.
7 way plug
Ground
brake/left light
brake/right light
driving lights
trailer brakes
back-up lights
hot to charge brake-away kit
So my question is If I want to charge a big battery for a winch or spotlights, what wire should you use and will it hold the power.(big enough wire)
OR if I just want to put a switch and two loading lights what should I do or wire to use.
The lights are not going to be high output just small loading lights say 25-35 watts.
Thanks for any help.

unless you used a device to limit the current going through the center pin (marked as "back-up lights"), you'll need way more than a 10 or 12 gauge wire to change a battery after using a winch. Most run some 2 gauge from the truck's battery to a connector on the rear bumper... Like the warn kit for the multi-mount.
When you hit the switch on the winch, that battery on the trailer will attempt to re-charge itself as fast as possible. the tractor lights would be OK through the constant 12v+ wire... Maybe one of the electrical engineer types could tell us what resistor or similar we'd need to limit that 10 gauge to say...30 amps of flow.
If you really were going to use that 7th pin for reverse lights, run the work lights off the hot wire to charge the breakaway battery...
On your truck, the center pin isn't actually wired to anything, right?
OR, ditch the breakaway battery and run the breakaway off the larger battery you're going to run...

The owners manual said it was if you get the tow package. Did they put the pins in and not wire them?
Jon
I'm not sure I understand your delimma...If you have the tow pkg, yes. All 7 go all the way to the RV plug.

On edit, Pin 4 will support low watt bulbs, uses a 14 guage wire to fuse #1.

The addition of a low resistance wire wound resistor will slow the charge rate but achieve full charge after a time, thereby reducing the current on the wire. Done on larger battery chargers all the time.
Problem I had is the batteries were almost out after the truck sitting with the trailer on it for 8 days while I was in the hospital. Really need a relay on the line kicked by the ASD relay so it shuts off with the engine off.
The breakaway always seems to draw a little current, or just unplug it while sitting. Don't forget, that hot wire also avails the main batteries to the trailer at all times, not just the breakaway battery.
I like it that way, impresses the DOT on a check of the breakaway. The way they check is to put it on a grade and pull the plug, see if it moves. The main batteries make sure it does not.
