TMO will store your stuff for a long time - I think it's 6 months - while you're looking for a home. For free.

We've done this before. We carry the stuff we might need for the next few months. Then let TMO pack, load, ship, and store stuff we don't use a lot. Like all that stuff currently stored in your basement.

When you find a home, they'll deliver the stuff they've been storing. Also for free.

In a DITY move, they'll only pay to move the stuff once. So, you rent a trailer and move it the first time. When you move again, that's all on your dime.

ABF might be an option but they're not real cheap. They'll drop a semi van in front of your house, you pack it and they pull it to the new house and you unload it. You pay based on how much space you use so the tighter and more condensed you can pack, the cheaper it is.

One other thing. Household stuff is HEAVY! I have packed our 24' stock trailer full a couple of times helping friends move. I am always suprised at how heavy it pulls. How is the economy where you are headed? Will you be able to sell the trailer once you get moved?

Im headed to Yuma, Az. Big area for motocross and sandrails and the like. I should be able to unload that trailer easily. Not to mention all the snow birds that come down every winter. When I had my 20' trailer I was the guy to have help others move. It does get heavy and pull heavy very fast. The timing issue is what is driving this whole problem. I cant schedule a commercial carrier because I dont know when the house is going to sell. Massive garage sale is in the near future and I think a 24' trailer plus my bed and her suburban should suffice. If not then the new owners/renters will have some furniture.
