Trailer brake/controller problem

I had a Jordan in my truck. It seemed to be having problems. When you depressed the brake and the brakes applied (lets say 6 amps), you could hold the brake or depress the brake further down and the amps would drop.

Went and bought a Prodigy P2 and am having the same problems. Press the brake and get 3 amps, hold the brake in the same postion for a couple of seconds and the amps drop to 1.

Any suggestions.

Rule #1 with any electrical issue, especially on a trailer connection, is to always verify good grounding. Start in the hitch area, as that's the part that gets the most abuse. Don't rely on grounding thru the ball. Work your way to the wheels and once you know every ground connection is as good as it can be, then start dealing with other issues.

Remember that more than just shoes are meant to wear out in trailer brakes. The eletro magnets need replacing after time too.

Drawing high amps initially then dropping sounds like a bad connection heating up and gaining resistance. I agree with 1-2-3 about grounding but I'd check the 7-way first then move on.
