Towing EGT's
Towing EGT's
I recently moved my pyro probe from post-turbo to pre-turbo and I was shocked on a recent trip how different the temperature readings were. With it pre-turbo, I am right around 1200 degrees very often with plenty of peddle left. How hot do you guys run and when do you back off? I'm debating between a 4 inch exhaust and an air intake to try and get my egt's back down. Which would you recommend? Currently, the only upgrade that I have done is a Comp in EZ mode.
Thanks for any replies.

With just the Edge in EZ mode you shouldn't have any problems. But 1300 is max. I've been told it's OK to run 1350. An air filter would be cheaper and easier to upgrade. If you are going to add more HP then the exhaust would be a good addition. If you tap the pump you will probably want both. $$$$

The 4" exhaust will drop an easy 150* off your egt's. Likely, won't do much for power but will cool her down. They should have come from the factory (like they do now) with 4". A scotty 2 may also drop a little egt and add some flow but the exhaust is what will really knock down your egt.

I have hit 1400* while towing up grades but I back out to max 1300* most times
1400* EGT will also overheat my tranny and a long upgrade at 1300* EGT will also start my engine temp to rise to 220* plus my tranny fluid runs hot
This is the reason most mechanics install the EGT Probe pre turbo and the tranny temp probe in the fluid hot line to get a truer reading of temps

I'm towing a 24 foot travel trailer. Not sure on the weight. During this past trip, it was over grades in the 7% range I believe. I do have the turnbuckle so I'm getting about 27 - 30 lbs of boost. I hit 1200 in both 3rd locked and very easily in overdrive going 65 - 70. It kind of sounds like the exhaust will give me the most reduction for the money. A new turbo would be nice, but I don't have that kind of $$ right now.
Interesting......My trailer is a 24ft enclosed car trailer and probably weighs in around the 7500-8000 range. I have to tow up a 12 or 18 mile 6% either way I go race and pretty much my egt's can be maintained around 1000. I tend to keep the rpms at around 2200-2400 when climbing (od locked out). I also have an EZ with the turnbuckle on the wastegate and can get 28-29 lbs of boost. Wonder how much guage accuracy falls into this.
That is interesting. I wonder what the difference is. Its possible it could be elevation. The biggest grade that I have to pull is Parley's canyon out of SLC in case you have ever gone up it. I'll bet the elevation there is around 6,000 - 7,000 feet above sea level.
I believe that altitude plays a part in your higher EGT's, I noticed higher EGT's (and lower boost) on I-70 hitting the passes than in California where I picked it up. That said when I pulled my empty 5er (9700lb) up Floyd hill west of Denver (6% about 4-5 miles) my EGT's only touched 1100 a couple times, mostly around 1000-1050, kept speed at 50 and still had pedel left but traffic was too heavy and I was taking it easy (next time I'll run it up close to 1200 and see how much speed I can get)
I must be doing something different while towing. I pull a 37’ Newmar fiver which weighs on the heavy side and with the additional upgrades (see sig), I never see anything over 1100 degrees pulling a 7% long grade. Most of the time while pulling around 70 mph on flatter roads I see around 750-800 degrees. Generally, whenever I see the need to I kick it out of over drive, this helps the EGT’s run cooler. On longer steeper grades such as 7% grades, I will gear it down into second which again helps the EGT’s and transmission run a lot cooler. I am able to pull these grades at a steady 35 mph +. My Pyrometer gauge is pre-turbo.
The Scotty Air II will drop the egt more then a little bit and it works better the more you throw at it. The average egt reduction is 150F with moderate power increases.
EGT reductions of 300 are common on trucks near the limits of what a single charger can do. Its great for the towing crowd. that is how I tested it.
Running an 01 HO a B1 Kwik Spool, TST Drag Comp, 4" exhaust, and DD stage 3 injectors I netted 350F reduction compared to running a stock air box. BHAF was 50F better then the stock air box, afe mega cannon showed a reduction in egt of 200 from stock.
I also ran with stock exhaust on a 98 24 valve, modified ECM, RV 275 injectors and an EZ and I got 200 cooler then stock.
The 4" exhaust was added later and I netted another 50F reduction.
Since late 97 I have compiled some very solid numbers on what it does and with what kinds of combinations.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.
