Towing doubles?

Trying to find out what the law says about towing doubles. IE..if I have my jeep on a trailer, can I tow my pop-up camper from the jeep trailer. Some states have a "the first must not be a bumper pull trailer" law.

Tried a search but I kept getting DMV stuff.

I've found "yes" and "no" on different sites. I've also found where they only state a "max" overall length. Tried the search option here also. I must have searched for the wrong thing.

I think its going to be a yes or no depending on the state. I have read in here before that people have seen people pulling 2 cars with bumper pulls before, I myself have never but im sure its being done.

I've seen a few "personal" doubles. I haven't really noticed if they were all bumper pulls, with one exception. Down in Florida I saw a guy towing two boats behind a pickup. It sure looked odd, and they were both bumper pulls.

If I recall correctly, it was a government vehicle (non fed). Water Management District, I think.

It's definately going to be different from state-to-state. Here in Az the trailer doing the towing MUST be a fifth wheel and there is a max length for the entire rig. I'm not sure what it is though.

Don't even try it here in BC regardless of the length.

Check this site but I wouldn't depend on it to be gospel because things change.

For what it's worth, here in Idaho it's max length- bumper or 5er-- 75' max. I pull a 5er and boat with a total length of 77' with no problems, just alot of looks

Can't do it here in Oregon, either, except commercial trucks with dolly/5th wheel.

I can see where it would be handy. Toyhaulers have their drawbacks.

The OP is from Louisiana. I don't think it is legal there either. For what it's worth, in TX you can tow any combo up to 65 ft. I once towed a car on a front wheel dolly behind my 5er. Was that triple towing?

I have seen it done in OR before. Once by a MT rig @ Fishermans Bend campground. I questioned the fellers and they said it was legal in MT and they saw 2 OSP rigs on the way over and didn't get pulled over. Just last summer I saw an OR plated 5th wheel flat towing a car heading South on I-5 right in Vancouver.

I have also been told (but can't confirm) that there is a loophole in the OR statutes that will allow you to pull a second trailer with a 5th wheel. That being one unit may tow another unit and a pickup pulling a 5th wheel is considered one unit. I have not seen anything to indicate that is true though.

I was in Eugene @ the Logging Conference yesterday and the Weigh masters had a booth there. Quite a few guys hanging around the 2 times I was by and I did not think about asking some of those questions. I did pick up the commercial paper work they had and it does address the RV's to some extent on it. I will go over it this week and see if there is any information that might be of interest.
