Tow Testing

After the dismal performance of my truck towing a 30 ft. TT weighing in at 7100 lbs, trying to go to Scheids, I decided I needed to test my truck out and see what she could handle.

Today I towed my Ford 4000 diesel tractor, with tiller attached, over Afton mountain. Dunno what kind of grade but it is about 4 miles up, and the big trucks slow down pretty good going up. The tractor weighs in at about 4575 lbs (guessing the water in the rear tires is about 100 lbs each), and the tiller is about 600 lbs. With the trailer, that should have grossed out around 7,175. Pulled the mountain with no problem. With the PM3 on level 0, I was slowing down, and could only maintain about 60 mph with the pedal to the floor, in 3rd, and EGTs just under 1,000 and boost at around 19 psi. With the PM3 on level 2 or 3 I could maintain 70-73 mph with EGTs less than 1,100, in OD (no gear hunting) and boost around 25 psi. On level 4 I could accellerate on the mountain but the EGTs wanted to go on up about 1,200. When I noticed that, I backed out of it to keep it at or below 1,200, but could still maintain speed OK. Boost was around 25-29 psi. I didn't try any higher level than that.
Glad I have that Scotty II on there. ;D I wonder if they come in black. :

No intercooler hoses blowing off, or even moving under the hood. ;D
BTW- If you ever wanted to know, the nuts on the intercooler hose clamps are 1/4-28. Got a couple of extras since I stripped one out a couple of weeks ago.
