Re:tow mirrors

I have the flip out mirrors that came stock on my truck. I don't like them at all. When not towing the convex is at the top of the mirror, so not much help watching my dully's when parking and such. They are not power mirrors, so adjusting the passenger side is a real pain going from towing to not towing and other situations in between. I can't believe "towing" mirrors are not powered. What was Dodge thinking?

Perhaps it's because I have always driven with the convex in the bottom corner and that's what I'm used to, but I don't seem to be adjusting to them very well. >

Re:tow mirrors

My friend gave me these mirrors when he sold his ram. They slide over the origanal (sport type) mirrors and then they have a little plastic set screw that holds them on. They look real nice. When they are on, you can't tell its an attachment. It just looks like a nice stock towing mirror. Even the plastic color and texture is the same as the stockers. It holds the same shape and dimension as the stock mirrors, just sticks out a little futher. Looking at them from the drivers perspective, it incorperates the origanal mirror and has a small 4"by 4" mirror on the outside. I love these things. They look awsome while towing and you can remove them when your done....... I will try and find you a link or pic from the net.
[glow=red, 2, 300]Stump[/glow]
PowerVisions

You mentioned that your factory mirrors are heated. I replaced our factory mirrors with the PowerVisions and kept the factory adjustments, heat feature and added the electric extend/retract capability. The only complaint I have with the PowerVisions is that the passenger mirror is flat rather than convex like the factory mirror - a stick-on small convex mirror cures that.

They're not cheap, but they work as advertised.

Rusty

Just received them today. Have you got yours yet? I am wondering if I have to take off the whole door panel just to get to the mirror part? If so, do you have to have a special tool for the clips in behind the panel??? Your reply as soon as you can would be greatly appreciated. :

Grampa Bill

Re:tow mirrors

Grampaw,
You shouldn't have to remove the entire door panel. Makes it easier though. You can remove the screws for the door handle/arm rest and the screw by the mirror mount. Then just pull the door panel out from the upper corner where the mirror will mount. Should give you enough room to get a 1/4" socket and ratchet in there. Good luck. Let us know how it turned out.

Re:tow mirrors
Ladyram, I leave mine flipped out all the time. Been like that since I bought it. I feel that if the mirror is in the same position while driving, there is no confusion where to look. My .02 If it has to be moved for a reason, then I move it, but only then.
Re:tow mirrors

We should all be thankful that Dodge actually put a tow mirror on that is made in such a way that is useful. We drive the other brands at work and they are less than useful for visibility, adjustment in and out vs flip up and design for optimum placement of the convexes. The trend toward convex only on the right was to accommadate those that use their pickup for a car and to be able to see directly beside you when pulling away from the curb or lane change. Proper flat glass with a small convex is far better for tow vehicles as distance judgement with a convex is almost impossible as distance rearward increases. These mirrors were designed to meet DOT specs with visibility up to 8 1/2 feet wide (102&quot any loads over this and just like big trucks you are required to equip yourself with auxillary mirrors. I agree that some added extras like heat and power adjustment makes them even better but basically Dodge did make a pretty good mirror and slowly has added the features we need. Pull a trailer with the other brands with the stock mirrors and you will appreciate what you got. We have come out of Iowa pulling two trailers from the factory at up to 82' long and in the convex the whole rear trailer looks like an ant and it would be pretty hard to see the back end in the corners without a flat glass mirror. The best tow mirrors

Power Vision Towing Mirrors

Do a search for these type of mirrors. They replace the stock mirrors and look like they came from the factory. They are electronically controlled within the truck so you don't have to stick your hand out of the window to retract them. They also fold in to allow you to still get into the narrow car washes. To fold them out, the mirrors have to be retracted. The only time you have to manually touch the mirrors is to fold them in to fit into a tight space. They give you normal mirrors for regular driving and extended mirrors for towing.

http://www.smithsultimate.com/products1.html

They also have the heat controlled mirrors. These mirrors are made for your truck. Expensive but worth every penny if you don't want to manually adjust them when it is raining or snowing outside.

Re:tow mirrors

Yeah that is weird. They fit my 99 just fine. Was a SIMPLE bolt on. You will not find a much easier bolt on for our trucks!

Re:tow mirrors

As a result of this original post I looked into towing mirrors because I had a set of **** slide on that went on the stock mirrors. Those were less than adequate for me, towing when you get into a busy freeway or city and have to rely on them for lane change and seeing. then they really started to suck.

I found Besttop replacement mirrors that are identical to the **** replacement mirrors. They are heated and electric which hooked up to my original wiring. They cost me 338.00 to my door and installed in about an hour. Wow are they big (elephant ears) as I see them, but the visability is very good. So far, happy with them.

Rich
