Tires for towing
Toyo Open Country HT with Tuff Duty they are made for diesel trucks. http://toyotires.com/tire/pattern/op...y-ht-tuff-duty
I talked to a local tire shop about the Dura Grappler today after reading many good things about them online. He reported very good performance and mileage from them on diesel trucks. He said he just replaced a set on a F350 diesel. The guy apparently tows quite heavy with his truck delivering RVs with a lot of highway miles. The set that just came off had about 45k on them with about 40% tread remaining. And the tire shop manager said they do very well in the rain and snow. I think I may give them a try. Going to go see them first hand tomorrow. 285/70/17 E rated carry 3750lb per tire, same as my current Toyo ATs.
Carl48, even longer than the Bridgestone Duravis? It's a commercial tire, and the reports I've seen say easily as long as the MICHELIN's for high loadings/high mileage.

I have done exceedingly well with General Ameritrac's...not the most firm sidewall tire but it has worn well for me and I net over 80K miles with them. However, it depends on which Ameritrac you get. The ribbed version nets the higher miles and from what I have read and seen, its a bit of a crap shoot to get a good set...I guess I lucked out. Many hate the Ameritrac because it wears out so fast. I think its the TR that wears bad or worst. Still going to switch up to the 700's when its time.
I need a good mixed-use tire. I'm looking for a 33 or 34" x 17" tire that has a 3,400# or so weight rating for the fiver, and that will work well in snow for skiing. The only thing I can find is the 285 70 or 75 Toyo A/T (or its lower rent cousin ,the Nitto) AT tire. Is there anything else?
Between the Nitto and the Toyo, I'm leaning toward the Toyo. I can't imagine getting more than 30K on a set of truck tires towing and snowing and on our rural mountain roads so the 50K warranty on the Toyo will likely come into play.
Is there another option?

i have 285/70-17 nitto terra grapplers on my 2006 3500 (SRW)... i've been pretty happy with them so far... i do alot of towing with a 30' gooseneck, usually 12-15k lbs. of hay or skid loaders, tractors, etc... and they do great... the only time they ever worried me, i had a 38' gooseneck with 30k lbs. of hay on it.. they were buldging a little on the road, luckily i was only going a few hundred yards... my next tires will be the toyo open countrys or MT atz... stay away from the BFG A/T in load range D... i had them on before my nittos and only put 8k miles on them before they were half shot, i sold them and got my nittos
i run michekkin 285 70/17 ltx m/s.. the wear is not that great, i will be very lucky to get 50k. i like the ride, but horrible in mud, snow isn't great either in my .02. thank god for 4wd. the rears wear 2x what the front do...
