I have seen a couple of guys do that and as to a wiring nightmare its not its just one addtional wire, run it through the accessory pin on a 7 pin plug thne use that wire to run all the way to the rear and use for the brakes. I didnt do it that way i just adjusted my brakes about 1/32 tighter on the rear trailer than the center trailer, so it would tug tight first, just ever so little that you would barely notice it but on ice you could see the rear brakes would engage and drag just a little before the front trailer tires would quit rotating. Also the rear trailer had dual 6k axles so between it and the 8k axles under the GN the braking was there.
