Slide in Camper on a Shortbed?

I'm wondering if anybody is hauling a slide in Camper on thei shortbed truck?

I've been considering an older slide in for occasional use, I have seen some SB trucks hauling campers with the tailgate down but I am just looking for experiences and feasibillity of this.

Thanks for any input.

I have seen a couple of guys do this, but an 8 footer is max, and you have to have the tail gate down obviously, the older models seem to be lighter, some from the 70`s and 80`s no head or slides thats for sure, good luck

No problems with 8.5 foot slide in camper on my short bed. I do not leave the tailgate on mine as the camper has an 18 inch drop down in the rear. Two trips to Alaska and back with no problems. And it does have a toilet.

Get the extended sleeping area if possible. I know a guy with a 3500 qcsb srw and 2400# popup. His rear axle weight is 50% higher than his front. That's pretty tailheavy. The extended sleeping area should distribute more weight forward, balancing the load better.

FarmerJim, I would be worried with your set up. That is putting a lot of weight behind the axle which makes the steering light. It might be squirrely in a sudden lane change and our local politski with the portable scales would take issue with it. The other day I was behind an F-150 with lumber sticking over the tail gate, from the trucks attitude it was over loaded. He hammered the brakes and changed lanes quickly, the truck swayed badly. I got past him at the first opportunity, didn't want to be around when things came unglued.

When I was rodeoing, I had a 8' camper. For a while it was in a short bed truck. i just laid down the tail gate and it fit fine. It did only weigh 600 lbs. It was a capri rodeo camper.
Its for sale if anyone is interested.

It is a Travel Light with the extended sleeping area specifically made for the short bed and there have been no problems with steering or sway, but thanks for your concern.

That Eagle looks bigger than the truck. Emergency manuevers on the freeway are going to be white knuckle events.

I have a short bed '06 2500 / Cummins with a 2009 855 Eagle Cap. I first had Timbrens on the front and rear axles and had some sway / rocking when carrying the camper for the first time. I added SuperSprings and the truck now handles beautifully. I've had taken it as far as FL. with no problems. By the way, the dealer delivered it on a Chevy short bed to my home.
