> I think Mr. DOT Haulin would say park behind the scales and
> take 10 hours out of service,,,,,,
I think there are probably different procedures everywhere you get checked.
Heresay,,one driver told me a DOT man made him unhook and drop his camper
and followed him to a nearby motel to get a room.
His truck was 06 Dodge 3500 quadcab w/o sleeper birth but homemade bunk.
Another driver was legal but had wrong date entered in his logbook and tried to explain that to DOT at scales. The man took him out of service for ten hours. While driver was outside dropping his trailer the man came out and cleared him,,,,the man called his company and they verified his wrong date entry. The man applogized and cleared him to go.
> Getting a frame stretched for $1,000.00 to $1500.00 sounds cheap
I talked to a driver yesterday on the phone. He said a company in Elkhart quoted on his 06 Dodge 3500, tube frame stretch for 48" sleeper.
$900 if he removed/replaced the bed and
$1200 if they removed and replaced the bed.
The job would be DOT approved.
I didn't ask about restraints but to be DOT approved, I'm sure restraints would have to be present. I won't say company name for obvious reasons,,PM me if interested and I'm not affliated whatsoever.
Another quote from shop in Philadelphia, Ms quoted same 48" stretch a few hundred dollars more. Also DOT aprroved.
My stretch of 63", channel frame on 07, with them removing and replacing CM hauler bed,,,???$$$. I need to call. The channel frame on Chassis Cabs stretched are suppposed to be cheaper than the P/U tube frame stretches, so I here.

The dot book in its own words does not say how you have to spend 10 hours of off duty, So if i decide to sit in my truck and watch a dvd for 10 hours, log it as off duty for the same 10 hours, dot can do nothing about it, i was not on duty, nor was i driving, he can not shut me down, also if i get inspected, and he asked me were i sleep, i will tell him to reference my log book, i never say anythig....i tell them what does the log book say, that way you dont get caught for saying something different than the log book, they have there ways of tripping you up and then they shut you down write tickets. If you say nothing then they cant do nothing.

actually it depends on where you sit in your truck and watch that DVD. The books say "at the controls of a commercial vehicle", which means behind the wheel isn't "off duty" and sitting in the passenger seat is "on duty, not driving" which still counts towards the 14 hour day, ask any team driver thats been nailed for riding shotgun and his log book not showing such.
To legally claim the per diem, you have to show that you couldnt make the trip and back in the legal alotted time, not just "show" you spent the night away from home. When asked how I can cliam my 10 hrs off duty, I explain once I pull out from under my flatbed, the truck is now my personal vehicle and it is no longer a CMV. It's a play on FMCSA wording, but it keeps from getting a ticket. Next truck will be a cab/cahssis with a sleeper installed not only for log purpose but also my confort.

You guys are funny with all these posts about how you trick them. They all know what we do, they all know that a log book is nothing but a book of lies. They key is don't get caught in a lie. I have logged about 800,000 miles in a bit over 4 years and never been questioned about where I sleep, why is there a bed in the back of your truck, did sit in the front seat while claiming off duty, and so on. When they ask for my logs they are always current and always look legal, then they have nothing else to say but have a nice day. BTW there are some much nicer window extesion coming out soon, no drill and easily removed for those "flying under the radar" runs back empty. I post some pics and info when the comany has them done (less money too).
On your quad cab how wide is the windo in the back, how high is it?

I have been out here hauling for 4 years, with several different trucks. With the old laws it was nice to be able to use sleeper berth time to split the days. But with the new HOS rules there really is not much benefit. Just log the 10 hours as off duty and you are fine. As long as you do not claim sleeper berth time they can not question you. I have used the back of a quad cab (98.5, 99, 06) an 06 crew duramax, and now my 07 mega cab as a bed for the last 4 years with no hassles as long as its logged off duty not sleeper berth.

My dad was taken out of service in AL. and they escorted him to the next exit ,and watched park and enter a hotel.so if your going through Bama your off duty won't get you anywhere without hotel reciepts.he's got a qc and we had already removed back seat and put in hinged plywood and 4"foam mattress and back wall trim out of a reg. cab
Thats Roadmaster cab extensions.

Its not written on the DOT book but as off now I have always log sleeper. I was thinking of removing the front and rear seats and placing a bed. I met an old man who has been in the Hot Shot field for a long time and thats what he did on his Ford F350. DOT tried busting him a few times but he said there was nothing DOT could do.
