Interesting... I always thought Walmart welcomed RV's to stay overnight in their lots?! I even called one before I left for a trip down south and they said it was ok to stay! I ended up staying at a state park farther down the road though...

In some places, local ordinances will not allow them to do it.

Many WalMarts do. In some locales, however, RV park owners have successfully gotten laws or ordinances passed banning overnight RV parking anywhere except campgrounds or RV parks. In these cases, the WalMarts are governed by the local regulations. As you indicated, if you're planning to stop at a particular location, it's best to verify it with the local manager before you leave.

And, no, I ain't said if I'm FER or AGIN camping at WallyWorld (a super hot topic among RVers)!!

I've never "camped" at WalMart, but I have spent the night on their parking lots a couple of times.

Ditto I have definitely crashed in the W-mart parking lots. I usually pull up next to the big trucks and nobody bothers me. I would say in general if it doesn't say you can't, then you can. I think they don't want people CAMPING in the parking lot like you see at the Flying J on 95 South in Virginia. People bust out their sliders, lawn chairs and BBQs there.

I remember seeing a while back that the only way to know for sure, is to
ask the particular store involved.

Unfriendly RV's

Waam here. One of the problems is the Meth. lab people are now going mobile. They are now using motor homes to make their brew while they are on the road. Once the batch is made they are starting to use the Wal-Marts and the like parking lots to do their distribution to their dealers. Thus the unfriendlyness towards RV's in their parking lots. This is now quite a problem already in the state of Florida. Waam Holland, Mich.

I've stayed at truck stops before... I don't even put my slides out or disconnect from my truck... I just crawl back there to sleep, then fuel up in the morning and leave...

Screw Wal-Mart!

I have never in the past nor will I in the future spend the night in one of their parking lots. Today we were at a large W-M and there was a motorhome sitting at the edge of the lot by the road. I quiped that I wouldn't feel safe there and my woman agreed. She does feel safe in truck stops however, and that's where we overnight while on the road. As an ex-trucker I like the noise and smell. Plus I've never seen a sign that says "No Overnight Parking" at a truckstop and never been told that I couldn't stay there. I always ask and have been told to run my slides out and even offered electric once or twice.

I also don't do rest areas either, ever!

Wal-Marts are a great overnighter.

When we are going on a many days trip to a destination, I get very tired of paying $30-$50 a night at a RV park just to pull in..sometimes not even hook up..sleep and leave at 8:00 the next morning. We use Wal-Marts where our good judgement tells us it is safe. Our only bad Wal-Mart experience was in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, where the local RV parks had petioned Wal-Mart and the city council to not allow campers on the Wal-Mart lot overnight. This was strictly monetary greed and we decided to boondock rather than patronize those parks.

Like every choice in life, some are better than others.
