register car hauler as rv?
register car hauler as rv?
I looked at some 44 foot goosenecks car hauler types with 12 feet of living space up front, room for my jeep and bike in back.my question is can I register it as an rv?one dealer told me I can register any trailer rv,one said she thinks I cant because it has cargo capacity.I thought if it has a bathroom it is rv.I will only haul personal stuff and family on vacations.from what i have read here rv plates would make it easier,(no scales, exempt on weight, less hassle, etc.)has anyone done this, does anyone know the law?Ive been going back and forth on the trailer thing and have gotten a million different answers.trailer weight is around 15,000 gvwr,10340 shipping weight, triple axle, vintage rvt series, illinois.any help is appreciated
It seems like you should be able to register it as an RV. Best option would be to call your State/Local DOT office and ask them. That way your state DOT told you to do something, you have a legitimate source of information if someone challenges it down the road.
Just my $0.02.

DOT doesnt care what it is,as long as its plated rv by the secratary of state.the trailer sales girl said sec.of state will probobly cross out rv on registration application(plates)and put as cargo.then I am stuck with a triple axle overweight trailer. Its just that $27,000.00 is a lot of money for us to spend.I just want be sure I and my wife can legally pull the thing around and rv plates simplify everything.I dont have a cdl and dont want one.if the title comes back non rv I am stuck with a beautiful trailer that I cant use legally.does anyone have one like this titled rv?
I can't imagine how it could not be classed as an RV when it is purpose built to live and recreate in and carry "recreational" vehicles and since that is what you also intend to use it as, what is the arguement? It is hard to imagine that all the other toy hauler style RV trailers out there would fall into a commercial class when their intended use is as a RV. Will a simple phone call to DOT or whoever processes the application and issues the plates not clear this up before the purchase of the trailer?

Just a heads up. Buddy of mine had something similar, he went to triple 7k axles to give himself a good safety margin. It won't add that much $ to the bottom line, either.
Back to your question, you would have NO problem here in NC. It IS an RV trailer. It's got a bed, stove, fridge, toilet, etc... It doesn't matter what ELSE is in there, as long as it meets the requirements for an RV.
My buddy has a Volvo White (10 wheeler) pulling a three axle 40' trailer that he hauls race cars in and it is registered as a motorhome in Texas. The truck has a box behind the sleeper with a bathroom and sleeping/sitting area. So I thank you would be ok. Can you go to dmv and ask them?

Harley Bill where did you find one for that cheap, we are looking at one with a tandem axle and 14' living quarters and it has a purchase tag of $78,000CDN. With it being over 10,000lbs and a jeep coming in at close to 4000lbs it will be very close. They cannot register a vehicle commercial until it is associated with a business or hauling for hire. PK
I looked at one about the same but all aluminum made by ATC---$69,000.00 amazing trailer but out of my price range.this one is a vintage aero rvt series steel frame, aluminum walled, nice trailer, small living space, large cargo space, my dream trailer....with fancyy wheels and some extras I would get up near $30,000.00, also has a railed viewing platform.I've looked at many dealers and prices vary greatly.I tell them I am looking at many dealers and to give me their rock bottom price because I'm not playing bargaining games,I will compare everyones prices and will pick the best price for the trailer I like best, you'de be surprised how fast they drop 6-8 thousand bucks when they know youre shopping and serious about buying. My wife called secretary of state 4 times today, put on hold for almost an hour twice,on hold till finally a girl tells her nobodys really sure and she should call back tomorrow and try asking someone else.(typical of illinois, nobody ever has answers if you can even get through to any governmental office your lucky)they have numerous websites to answer any questions about vanity plates, anyway she is going to go stand in line for a couple hours at the DMV to try get me some answers.this state is very screwed up and at a standstill due to our recent cdl's for sale scandal which the governor and half the sec. of state have been indicted.she was also told that if I register it rv and illinois thinks it is the wrong class they will change it to proper class and plates will arrive as basic cargo trailer plates which would mean I need a cdl to pull my trailer.I've been looking for a trailer for awhile now and even the dealers give me contrary info on plates hauling etc. I just need to know because I've been working over 60 hours and more a week (construction)and I want to get this beautiful trailer and give my wife and kids a month on the road and see this great country of ours together, with me and no cell phone, work,or other hassels(getting pulled over with 3 axles and over26001 pounds gcvw and no cdl would be a huge hassel.I dont see how this is not an R.V. dealer says because it has cargo capacity and hauls vehicles also. I am ready to pull my hair out!!!
OK so have you or your truck ever been registered or used this vehicle for the purpose of work,a business or commercial venture. Will the trailer ever be registered to be part of your work, a company or commercial venture, will the trailer ever haul anything but recreational equipment which you own for that sole purpose and at any time during your job on paid hours. If the answer to all of this is NO then it is a "recreational vehicle" for the purpose of recreation on your off work time hours for your enjoyment of you and your family. Does the unit have RV appliances in the living quarters and was it built with RV design features, it is an RV. By definition it is a toy hauler with a different platform than what most RV dealers sell. Tell the dumb asses it gives you more safety and security than the RV junk normally found and approved by the DOT found travelling the nations highways with indescriminate structure and running gear failures. 8000lbs truck + 14,000lbs trailer + 2500 hitch weight = 24,500lbs gross = no CDL. There are tri axle 5th wheels exceeding this amount being hauled by class 6 MDL tractors not registered as commercial vehicles but do exceed 26,000lbs and in some states require CDL's. Don't leave out the people with over abundances of cash who drive full 100% motor coaches that don't register as any thing but "recreational" with no large vehicle experience and travel our roads. Yes Illinois may be screwed up but your senator does not want to pick on RV'ers as it is detrimental to his tourist tax base and their dispoasable income to the state. PK
P Kennedy,I agree with you completely, common sense says its a no brainer. My wife is going to dmv today maybe she will get answers.maybe the trailer dealer is a flake and is wrong,my worry is that by the time I find an answer the trailer will be sold, trailer dealer says she cant get an answer from vintage either, too big a gamble to just buy and see what the plates come back as.I found vintage trailers number,I will call them myself today.their number is (574)522-2261 in case you want to call P.Ken(you say the price looks good,if your still looking for one)I see these 90 year old men drop a million bucks down and they can drive these 60 foot long superbuses towing a 21 foot long cadillac(and for some reason when I get stuck behind them for miles they always have their right turn signal flashing just to annoy me)I just want the same rv rights they have so I can drive around in a daze with my big trailer being the one in the fast lane doing 45 mph blocking all of you guys from getting to work on time,oh yeah I will be sure to leave one of my turn signals annoyingly flashing to ****you off.
good news, they told my wife they there pretty sure it meets Illinois rv specs.but the triple axle may be a problem but theyre not sure.So I guess if it meets rv it will be registered rv.so I will give it a shot, and dont worry I will stay in the slow lane so wave high if you see us motoring through your state.my ctd wants this trailer as bad as I do.so next will be the hitch,I think I'll get the b&w turnover ball.(I need my truck bed for work as I'm in construction) how much does the b&w cost?I will install it mysel. If I buy the trailer we will see if theres any money left to buy diesel so I can pull it!!
In my state (Florida) you can go on line, pull up the Motor Vehicle chapters in the state statutes, and look at their definitions. Do that for your state, and see how they define an RV. In Florida, an RV is also exempt from CDL requirements.
I have a 39' Peterbilt COE straight frame with a 21' garage and an RV section - it was titled as an RV in Washington State, and is titled same in Florida. Never mind the opinions of dealers, check your state definitions and make sure your paperwork reflects what you want. It is only an "option" to load gear or cargo in a toy hauler - you could fill it with lawn furniture, or inflatible beds - who is anyone to say - but it has a bathroom, and cooking apparatus, and is self-contained and meant for temporary housing, so it is an RV - in Florida they have a different catagory for trailer, bus conversion etc., but they are all within the "umbrella" of an RV. I also carry a copy of the Florida statutes, the former Washington title, the Florida title, and the Florida definitions in my rig, so if I get stopped for "running a scale", I can show it is an RV, not a "truck".

I m curious , hows the progress?
In my state, we have a class a non cdl......I pull a 50 ft trailer, which technically grosses over 26k.....I ussually run 24.5k or so...but I was able to get a non cdl class a doubles, triples over 26k.....As long as its not for profit, I can drive anything.
