Reese Fifthwheel slider
Reese Fifthwheel slider
I need a little more room from the camper to the toolbox when backing into a campsite. Long story but I have a fuel tank and tool boxes behind the cab that cut down on the angle that I can turn. (Reg cab long bed) If I cut to hard the front of the camper will hit the toolbox, not a good thing.
Has anyone used these sliding hitches. The one that I am considering is a Draw Tite or Reese with the round rails that slides back 12". How well do they work and how easily do they slide? Any info will be appreciated.

I don't have the round tube slider, but I do have the Reese 16K slider.
It works as intended.....it takes a little getting used to, but when you know how to work things, it goes easier.
No issues with performance so far......

yeah that the one I need the 16k. Do you find it makes a big difference when backing up? Also does it slide easily? I am thinkin you pull the pin of the slider then lock the camper brakes and pull the hitch back. Is that the idea? Does it feel tight when on the highway no movement in the latches?
I have the Reese 16k round tube slider hitch. It is user friendly and operates just like it is designed to. Now that I've become a "pro" at manuvering my fiver, it is VERY rare I use the slider. pcm
Under normal conditions without the fuel and toolbox it wouldn't be a problem. I've been using the thing in this configuration for about 4 years. There are times when I have to get pretty close to the box to cut in. I don't know how tight an angle I can make but with a little more room it sure would take a bit of pressure off. My wife watches the trees and the camper I just watch the toolbox. I think my toolbox comes back 24 inchs from the back of the truck bed. That really makes a difference.
Yeah I will have to make a measurment in the morning to make sure the slider will give the adjustment I need. I think it will. Twelve inches is a pretty good distance. have been trying to figure how to handle the problem. I know if I get rid of the tool box that will work but I just can't leave the house without my tools. I could get rid of the fuel tank but that is real handy and don't want to do that one either. To compromise with a toolbox fuel tank combo really cuts down on the fuel and tools I can carry and cost about $2000 bucks. That just ain't happenin. The slider would be great if their not a pain in the butt to use and will give the extra room, that would be nice.
I was watchin a guy with a chevy four door, quad or whatever they call it, with, I think a long bed this afternoon. He cranked that sucker right around with no worries to the cab at all. Even with the longer wheel base did a heck of a job. Even with my 133 WB they way I'm set up would be a chore. For the price it may be worth a try.

I have a Husky 16k EZ-Roller hitch, and got it for my short bed crew cab Ford. It works great, and is very easy to slide into position. I have it installed on my Dodge now, and no longer use the slide function, but it is still very tight after 8 years of pulling. I wouldn't hesitate getting another one. On the Dodge, I put an inside the rails diamond plate tool box that I think I picked up new for around $300. I have plenty of clearance, and it may be easier and cheaper to get a different style tool box as opposed to the hitch. There are many 5th wheel specific tool boxes available. Just an idea?
I'll have to take a pict tomorrow and post it. I have kinda a unique setup. Very long story but I really don't thing if I keep the configuration I have now I have to many choices. Yes the chest type box is great but I want to carry as much fuel as I can. As of not I have 90gal in an L shaped tank that fits under my tool box. I have to raise the toolbox up about 4 inches to get the fuel tank under the box. This raising the box is the major problem. If the slider will work properly and it will move the nose of the camper back far enough to miss the tool box that would be the way to go. I found the Reese sliding legs and round rails for about 300 bucks. If it will work that would be the cheapest way to go. If not I either stay with what I have or reconfigure another setup that would be much more expensive. If I was starting from scratch it would be a bit easier. The problem is the cost of reconfiguring the fuel and toolbox.
If I could find a 10" high chest to fit on the L of the fuel tank the problem would be solved, I think.

Well I would definitely try one of the roller hitches. If I lived closer, you could try mine out. I would try to see if I could find someone local that would let you try theirs, that way you would know for sure. Good luck
Here is something I had looked at, and it may work for your application?

Yep that's real close to what may work in the way of a tool box. I know I'll have to travel a bit on the lighter side and leave some stuff at home but that may not be a totally bad thing. That is worth a look see for sure thanks. Haven't found anyting even close to that in my searches. If you run across a 10" box................. I know pickey pickey pickey. LOL
Yeah I am on the road now and have been lookin for a guy with a slider to do exactly what you suggested. Someone will pop up. (I hope)

I bought my Reese and rails for under $600.00 shipped (I think it more like $540.00, but I can't remember). The slider works as designed, but it's a PITA. If you use a slider alot, consider an auto slider.
I just went from a Curt slider to an Pullrite superslider,
I can sell you my Curt slider but I am not sure how much the shipping would cost. I have compared the Curt to the Reese and it seems to be a better unit but still a PITA to use.
If you go the superslider way they make an adapter so you can use the rails in your truck.
