Reese brake controller

I have a reese brakeman digital controller in my truck it was in it when I bought it. I had it re wired by a friend because it did not work at all. The first time I used it it seemed to work ok. Now when I am hooked to the trailer and I step on the brakes the controller will only go up to 0.5 on the display. If I push the manual button it will go to 5.0 and I feel the brakes apply. The first time I used it the display would go to 10 I think do you guys have any idea what might be wrong?? Or is it just time for a new controller?

i would check the grounds. if the controller is toast i'd recommend the prodigy. they are about 150 but they work really well.
