Question about rim/tire for my Toyhauler

I recently took a trip pulling my toyhauler and had a mishap resulting in a flat tire and ruined rim on it. I pulled over and changed out to my spare and went on with my trip with no further problems.

Well now it's time to buy another rim and tire to replace my spare (at a minimum). I have never bought either one for this RV. The tires that are on the trailer are General Ameri*trailer ST in size ST 225/75R15 with a 2540lb rating in load range D, 65 psi max inflation.

The rims are a 6 bolt pattern 15 X 6.0 in chrome.

These are the original tires and are about 5-6 years old with just a few thousand miles. So im trying to decide if I just want to buy the one tire and rim and be done with it (for now)..........or go ahead and buy 5. And Additionally, im trying to decide if I should upgrade to a better tire. I feel like the weight I carry could warrant a heavier duty tire........maybe a load range E and a stiffer sidewall with a heavier load rating. Since this is a Toyhauler, I often load it up with 3 or so ATVs, generator, 120 gallons of fresh water, 28 gallons of gasoline in it's onboard gas tank.......plus other misc. junk. It's pretty heavy! I think I gross out around 20K.......truck and loaded trailer.

This is a 2004 Weekend Warrior FS2600 widebody travel trailer toyhauler with a 11000 something GVWR.

So what would you suggest I do? And where is the best place to shop for rims/tires for a trailer like this? I do business often at Discount Tire for my truck......but never inquired about RV trailer tires there. Ideas? Suggestions please? Thanks......Robert.

After so long the tires start to dryrot. It could show on the side walls or in the tread. If it was me, I would replace all of them. I have a 2006 Raptor 3814 and I am replacing all of my tires this year. Not because of wear, because of time.

I agree with replacing all at the same time. Last summer, before leaving on vacation, I noticed a split in the sidewall on one tire of my toyhauler. This is an 03 Ragen, very few miles.

I replaced that tire with my "brand new" spare, then bought a new spare. On the return home from vacation trip, which was not that far(less than 200mi), I blew a tire on the opposite side from the one I replaced. I was running about 70 mph when it blew, it destroyed the fender skirt on the trailer.

I was fortunate enough to be coming up on an exit in Post Falls, ID. with a Les Schwab tire center right there.

I purchased 4 brand new tires. I should have done that to begin with, but I was having a hard time spending the $s when I had such few miles on those tires, still had "like new" tread.

So, live and learn, Jess

Titan has that same size tire in a load range E. That's what we went with on our enclosed car hauler. I believe Discount Tires handles Titan.

I have a 10K enclosed trailer that came w/some cheap china tires & rims & managed to trade them off for a new set of 16" & now have E rated LT tire on it & feel much safer on the road.
It's not hard to find the 6-lug 16" wheels ypu need.

IMO, replace 'em all. And this time go Load Range E. Why in the hell mfrs put a bias-ply D-rated tire on big trailers like that is beyond me.

On my toyhauler (a triple-axle), it came with the SAME FREAKING SIZE as your WW. But the tires were Carlisle. On the way back from a trip to Utah last year, I experienced tread delamination on not one, but ALL SIX TIRES. Not all at once, but wow. $800 and stops at three different Les Schwabs between SLC and Winnemucca, Nevada, I had six new tires. My spare is still a bias-ply, because I managed to clean out the inventory of 225/750-15 E-rated tires and haven't bothered to change it yet.

My plan is to replace my wheels and tires yet again... this time with 245/75-16 Load Range E's, as they're good for another 300# per tire over the 15's I have now. I just don't have $1500-2000 to do it at the moment. I'd love to do the 235/80-16 size but I don't think those would fit without lifting the trailer a few inches, and possibly even modifying the wheel wells. As it is, the 16's will be close.

BTW if you want to upgrade to 16's, check eBay. They have some good deals on nice wheels.

I should have known you guys were going to highly recommend to replace all 5..!!!

It is so easy to spend somebody else's money isn't it!

I guess I will go ahead and price one replacement rim and 5 Titan tires. Then compare that to 5 of the 16'' rims if I can find them....and LT tires to match. And make a final decision. Cost will definately be a factor.

Thanks for all the input and advice. Keep it coming if you have more advice. Or if you have a link to a good buy on what im looking for.

A few months ago I spent nearly $1000 to replace the G rated Goodyears on my 5er, not for wear, they were 7 years old. It was an easy choice considering one blowout could easily damage the camper to the tune of many more dollars. In addition, the time lost searching out a tire store or repair center would ruin any vacation.

I bought mine here. Shipped to the door they beat the local Goodyear dealer's price by over $100 a tire.

Well I found a local place that seems to have some selection in stock....and seem very reasonable. I have almost decided to go ahead with some Carlisle 225/75R15 E rated 2840lb load capacity, 80 psi tires. I can pick these up for a $101 a piece + $40 bucks for a white painted steel rim to use as a spare. (all of the tires in this range seem to be made in china)

MikeB......I checked on Titan tires...but they seem to be kinda hard to get. They would have to be ordered at a minimum.....never in stock.

I can just buy 4 of the new Carlisle "E" rated tires and take one of my good "old" ones and use it for a spare, I suppose....on the white rim.

That seems to be about the most cost effective choice...with all new tires on the ground. Most of my RVing is fairly local........like within 300 miles or so. I'd love to go 16'' wheels/tires someday.......but I am not sure they would fit...and I don't have the cash currently to outlay for it.

THX guys for all of your input, and keep it coming if you have any more ideas, thoughts, comments....particularly about Carlisle tires.

Thanks! That may be a great option. Did you just pick yours up or did they mount them on your trailer?

Is there an equivalent 16'' tire/rim.........that matches the diameter/width (or close) to 225/75r15?

They are a little taller about 1 1/2 in. I think, you will have to measure and see if you have room.I picked the tire and wheel already mounted and put them on my trailer myself.MY brother did the same on his fifthwheel. I don't worry about tire trouble in the hot summer anymore

We have the Titan ST22575R15E on hand, but there is no wheel that can handle them.
