My 2 cents. If you want to get in the hotshot business in Texas ( oilfield ) you need to get a CDL, Health card and get drug tested. Then I would find a company that you could lease your truck with that would teach you the business and help you build up a customer base before you go out on your own. They typically pay you 70% to 75% of what the load pays plus a percentage if not all of the fuel surcharge. Plus you run under there insurance.
To start out on your own you have to have a CDL , health and drug cards, apply for a MC # and a DOT # You have to have the proper insurance which in most cases is a Million dollar liability and a Hundred thousand cargo policy to haul for most oil companies. That will cost you about $10,000.00 a year. You need to have a 40' Gn. You dont have to have a dovetail for oilfield work but it is nice to have for getting back hauls going home ( cars, boats, equipment ect. ). You should charge somewhere close to $2.00 a mile and charge a fuel surcharge around 15% at these diesel prices. Half for backhauls.
But the real trouble is building up a customer base, everbody and there daddy is getting into this business because the oilfield is booming, so you have a lot of competition.
Good luck.
