Not sure about my rear-end?!

Not sure about my rear-end?!

Hi there, I'm actually referring to the 2001 Dodge 3500 I just purchased. My rear-end is fine, I think? I just got home from purchasing this truck, 145,000 KM's, extended wheel base with a beauty deck and tool boxes, no blowby, seems to have a good LP and IP, 3.55 rear end.

I'm a bit worried that I didn't get a big enough diff to handle some decent towing. I'm going to be towing about 11,000 # (22ft tag w/skid steer and attachements) Will I be ok or am I going to have to chip this unit?

Having fuel pressure, pyro, boost guages installed before I drive it home. Hope all goes well, just feel I might have jumped the gun without doing my homework. Thanks for any imput! This is my first post.

Seriously enough, I have the 01 that is listed in my sig. I tow a skidsteer loader quite often, on a tandem trailer, with 2 buckets and a set of forks. I also haul 6 - 10 cords of wood on 5th wheel trailers.
Being a mobile mechanic, empty for me means having about 1500 - 2000 lbs of tools and gear in the back at any time. I have not had any grief with the rear end at all.
Only advice I can offer, is change up to Amsoil lubes throughout the drivetrain, and drive happily off into the sunset. Being that I also run in extremes of both hot and cold, this stuff has saved my butt in the past.
Otherwise, tow carefully, if you have a manual trans, get an exhaust brake, and happy hauling.

Hey pind,

Thanks for that post, good tip about the synthetic. I'll update my sig, I have the 5 sp manual. I got the dodge for more low RPM grunt than what my 94 F-350 IDI turbo has. The ford handled the load, but nothing to spare and pretty lousy economy. Looking forward to driving the new-to-me truck, I suppose the 3.55's will get me some decent fuel mileage for the 90% of the time I'm not towing.

I pull my 22 ft tag trailer with 3:55 gears loaded with a Skid Steer and a Tractor with a box blade all the time....I have weighted the trailer alone with the equipment on it 11215 GVW.....It pulls fine

dont quote me but did the 3500 come with 4.10 rear only? i did not think you could get the 3.55 in a dully combo

Here is how good a dana 80 is. Mine had taken the following before the spider gears exploded

100 sled pulls at or above 450 hp
500 hours of snowplowing, weight with plow 11000, to only plow in 2wd
100 trips of 60 miles with the GN and Truck loaded to 37000 lb with alot of tight turning and backing and some rough roads
Another 25-30k mi towing 5-10 ton on the trailer
80k total miles
MANY 4th gear holeshots on the street
And numerous other not so easy on parts activities. All towing was done with 125 hp injectors and a hx-40. Truck was driven, not babied, in 85k mi I only run 1 tank of fuel that something wasn't hooked to the back,or front. It finally let go this spring with at 36000 while I was making a turn about 1/2 mile from my house. The lsd clutches still looked good. Load it up and hammer down

GEICO, when I saw the title of this thread I thought the same thing.

As for the 410...in dually only...nope.
355 is standard and the 410 had to be ordered specifically.

I have only run the 355 in the 2 gens and towed heavier then I should at times...no problemo.

did you know that 6-10 cord weights 27,000 to 50,000 pounds!!! it would have to be a 8 foot wide tralier and 40 foot long and youd have to stack it 4 foot high! good lord, i didnt know a 3/4 ton could pull that much.......

I was a bit concerned that mine should of had the 4.10's but my research last night showed 3.55 or 4.10 on the 2001 but also read a lot of guys running 3.73's in the 2nd gen. as well. I'm not looking forward to have problems with the LP considering I've got a fair bit of dough in this unit. The old pre-stroke ford had a problematic IP but was only about $500 for a rebuild. Hope I got a good one here. Thanks for these replys, sounds like my pulling will be pretty good.

a cord is 128 cubic feet. that is 3 rick of 16" wood or 2 rick of 24" wood.

Hate to break the news, a 128 cubic foot cord of dry wood, tight stacked in whole rounds, weighs in between 1800-2250 lbs. Or maybe our trees are a little different up here in the great white north, I'm not sure, but I have yet to see anything other than a cord of green, ( just felled ) poplar, go over the 2250 mark.

no point in getting into a weenie contest here though. just a part of doing business. Now, if you can get me 10 cords of wood that does weigh in at 50,000 lbs, I would be interested. If you could get it to burn, it would be the best Btu/lb wood going.

Anyway, back to our previously scheduled thread.. Happy Hauling
