new trailer lights

last year i bought an 82 citation 32' bumper pull. the camper is in great shape other than the lights. the brakes were AWESOME, but the lights a very fussy. i was considering just going to napa and picking up a 4 pin wiring kit with a couple tail lights that would look like the ones on dumptrucks or jeeps and just make a couple brakets to attach them to my rear bumper on the camper and just intergrate the wires into my 7-pin plug. anyone have any reasons why i wouldnt want to do this and just try to repair my factory wiring?

If the problem is with the lights themselves, it would work. If the problem is in the wiring or the plug, that won't change anything. Might make the problem worse by adding additional strain on the circuits.

also, your running lights run off the same circuit, so you'd ahve to keep them intigrated.

What I did to take the load of the trucks electrical is put a relay in the running light circut of the trailer that is powered by the coach batteries, but triggered by the truck lights. Seems to work well..

The lens on those gets kind of more opaque as they age...

You might pop a lens and see if the bulb is bright, and if so new lenses might be all you need to do.

Also, take a good look at the 7 pin plug. If that's iffy at all, replace it.

i know it's probably been checked, but check your grounds. if your getting a ground but not a good ground it will make your lights dim.

My mom and step-dad had a 69' camp trailer that we fought the lights for about 6 years because the lights would work great sitting there when we were trying to figure them out, but not when we were driving (they would flicker the whole trip) as it turned out we had grounded the lights to the body (which we knew we had done) but the body was only grounding when it would rub on the frame (which the wiring harnes was grounded to) so we ran a piece of wire from the body to the frame and that fixed it.
