Need trans upgrades for towing

I am in the Hot Shot buisness and I have to say that are auto's suck. What can I put in my trans inorder to preform better? Im not trying to spend to much money right now, but I was thinking of getting a TQ and a shift kit from Trans Go.

Shift kit is a great one, TQ is the next best one. After that you are going to rack up some coin on upgrades.

DTT also has a great reputation.

While I'm not in the hotshot business, I am interested in longevity and reliability. From what I've researched and called around to local shops, I have to agree with the VB and TC.

After T/C and VB or Tansgo kit comes the Billet input. That can get expensive. The billet is 700 plus labor. Just remember that when you get a triple disk or heavy duty T/C and then increase line pressure with the VB you are asking more than a stock input was made for. Easy on take off and you will be ok for awhile.

good luck

Do you have the 48re or 68re?????? How many miles and how many pounds do you tote??? I have the 68re with 3.73s, I love it. Especially the manual shifter!!! I always try and keep my revs around 1700-2000 rpms. i tote around 20k everyday no problems. But I do know my tranny gonna take a crap sooner or later and once it does, im getting a upgraded TC and VB and DD pan. I dont have a problem with it downshifting on small hills as I am easy on throttle. I am getting a quad tow module once they perfect it though. PLEASE HURRY Qzilla as im desperate to have 1.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Wish i had 4.10s and im probably gonna do a gear swap within the year. but maybe a module is all I need. I have no problem in town with 20k pounds. again i am very light on throttle too.

P.S.S. I never thought of a shift kit, is that a good idea???? I guess it would to save those clutch paks!!!! Any more opionions on this matter?????????

P.S.S.S. I bet you have the 48re with all them mods you have. First off the 48re SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Second, all dem mods make your tranny SUCK!!!!!!!!!! I bet the power is nice though!!!!!!!! I know nobody can tell us about the 68re but its supposed to be a bad @$$ design, thats why i went with it, guess im a geunie pig!!!!

Thats not going to the dark side, Thats a Dodges man dream come true!!!! Its a fact that dodge just makes crappy products. Me and a couple other guys will give a heads up with the new 6 speed auto though once I get some more miles on her. Im almost gonna have this truck full time runnin 18-23k with my gooser. I should have more then 60k miles on her within the next 7 months. Once i hit 30k, Im dropping the pan and I will tell you guys what the insides of her looks like, hopefully she will still look like a virgin. If not, I will be the first to tell that she looks like a beat up slore!!!!!

If you go over about a 30 HP increase you'll start to slip the TC. With stock HP the tranny should be fine for many miles. With only a modest HP increase you might get away with a shift kit and added oil pressure.

The new TC and VB do tighten things up but it's a bit of cash and still not a very strong tranny. The input shaft is the next weak link, then the flex plate or the intermediate shaft, bla, bla, bla......... My real gripe though is that it only has four speeds and is a poor tranny to tow with. So even if you go all out and get a built one from Georend or Suncoast or somebody you still have a 50 years old design with just four speeds. Bummer.

I'm hoping we'll see an Aisin conversion one of these days, or 68 RE conversion. Hmmm. Dream on.

ccoop,

Sounds like you are a good tester for the 68RE! How do you like it so far? Shifts nice? Good gear spacing? Works well towing in the hills?

Thanks,

John

I luv the tranny so much. It was very hard deciding between the g56 and the auto. After doing much research, obviously i went with the auto. I hear its completly different from the ground up, not just a 48re with 2 od's. I kinda wish I had 410s though cause at 65 mph im only at around 1500-1600 rpms which is really sluggish. So I just make sure that im always doing around 73 mph so im in that 1800-1900 rpms for optimum whateva. My gas mileage is around 250-300 miles once i hit a 1/8 tank pulling 18-23k pounds. My gas light hasnt even come on yet and it only takes 85 to fill her up from there. I never did the math but the overhead says 9.4 to 9.9. I absolutely luve the manual shifter on the auto for keeping her not go over that gear. I am waiting for the mod the to keep it in that gear though. Not much of a problem downshifting erraticly as long as you know how to work the pedal. When i first got the truck, it slipped a little between shifts that I was starting to get worried, but now that I have over 5k miles on her, she shifts with no slippage what so ever. So far im completly happy with the new tranny but we shall see as she is holding up when the 30k mark comes up. I use this truck for towing only so I would say 96 percent she is toting around a nice load!!!! Where I go there is no steep hills, but I do plan on towing 4 jeeps up to telico NC in a couple more months so that will be my first experience in the mountains with her.

BTW the stock jake and tow haul mode smooths out alot more with a heavy load and more miles on her. Still jerks a little but nuting like it used to or when empty. Keep ya'll posted

A TC and VB put into a healthy stock auto will live a long time, and makes hauling anything a thousand times better. Yeah, these tranny's only have 4 gears, but with a fluid coupling, it isnt really a problem. I love how mine pulls a load now.

Spend your money on a 48RE ungrade. The Allison is just as prone to problems, is a much more expensive switch, and will give you no better usability. Dream no...nightmare yes.
