Need trans upgrades for towing
Need trans upgrades for towing
I am in the Hot Shot buisness and I have to say that are auto's suck. What can I put in my trans inorder to preform better? Im not trying to spend to much money right now, but I was thinking of getting a TQ and a shift kit from Trans Go.
DTT also has a great reputation.
While I'm not in the hotshot business, I am interested in longevity and reliability. From what I've researched and called around to local shops, I have to agree with the VB and TC.

After T/C and VB or Tansgo kit comes the Billet input. That can get expensive. The billet is 700 plus labor. Just remember that when you get a triple disk or heavy duty T/C and then increase line pressure with the VB you are asking more than a stock input was made for. Easy on take off and you will be ok for awhile.
good luck
good luck
P.S. Wish i had 4.10s and im probably gonna do a gear swap within the year. but maybe a module is all I need. I have no problem in town with 20k pounds. again i am very light on throttle too.
P.S.S. I never thought of a shift kit, is that a good idea???? I guess it would to save those clutch paks!!!! Any more opionions on this matter?????????
P.S.S.S. I bet you have the 48re with all them mods you have. First off the 48re SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Second, all dem mods make your tranny SUCK!!!!!!!!!! I bet the power is nice though!!!!!!!! I know nobody can tell us about the 68re but its supposed to be a bad @$$ design, thats why i went with it, guess im a geunie pig!!!!

If you go over about a 30 HP increase you'll start to slip the TC. With stock HP the tranny should be fine for many miles. With only a modest HP increase you might get away with a shift kit and added oil pressure.
The new TC and VB do tighten things up but it's a bit of cash and still not a very strong tranny. The input shaft is the next weak link, then the flex plate or the intermediate shaft, bla, bla, bla......... My real gripe though is that it only has four speeds and is a poor tranny to tow with. So even if you go all out and get a built one from Georend or Suncoast or somebody you still have a 50 years old design with just four speeds. Bummer.
I'm hoping we'll see an Aisin conversion one of these days, or 68 RE conversion. Hmmm. Dream on.

ccoop,
Sounds like you are a good tester for the 68RE! How do you like it so far? Shifts nice? Good gear spacing? Works well towing in the hills?
Thanks,
John

BTW the stock jake and tow haul mode smooths out alot more with a heavy load and more miles on her. Still jerks a little but nuting like it used to or when empty. Keep ya'll posted

A TC and VB put into a healthy stock auto will live a long time, and makes hauling anything a thousand times better. Yeah, these tranny's only have 4 gears, but with a fluid coupling, it isnt really a problem. I love how mine pulls a load now.
