Need help on the 7 pin plug wiring diagram on 2004 Ram

Want to have a 7 pin plug in the bed for the fiver. Already have the plug on the back bumper and would like to splice into those wires to make the one going in the bed work.

Can anyone tell me which wire goes where?

Thanks

Splicing into factory harnesses is usually not a good idea. Why don't you get a plug that fits into the rear bumper and extends to the bed? This is what I do. Put it away when not using it.

I also use a pigtail, but if you really want to add one, most times if you look VERY carefully at the inside of the cover on your existing socket, it will be labled. At lest it is one three that I have checked. HTH

Re:Need help on the 7 pin plug wiring diagram on 2004 Ram

I just put a second 7way in my bed for my gooseneck and my slide-in camper...

I'm gonna double check it all tonight... but I'm fairly confident I got it right. My 3rd gen truck is an '03 3500 with the factory tow-package.

left = yellow/pink
running light = black/orange
reverse = purple/black
pos 12v = white/red
right = white/pink
brakes = blue
ground = black ( on the 7way at the rear of the truck, there are two black wires... for a total of 8 wires going into the 7way connector? this wasn't an issue for me since I was running a 10 gauge wire ground into the bed for my camper... I didn't think the 12 or 14 gauge wire was adequate for the camper grounding.

hope this helps... the factory svc manual had some of this info but not all... so I'll double check it tonight when I test load the camper

That Pos. 12V, is that just for the brakes, or would that feed act as a charger for the batteries in the camper?

Positive. 12V Red wire is hot feed to charge the battery.
Blue is the line from brake controller to trailer brakes.

12 volt automotive wiring red is positive, black is negative, ground.

These two often get confused on RVs as 120 volt AC wiring white is neutral (ground) while black is line(Hot - don't touch). Also with 120 vol;t AC green is ground, whereas other colors are line (Hot).

I tested the wiring I posted above last night... all is good.

and yes... the 12 V is hot all the time and will be used by your camper to recharge it's batteries.

The blue wire (brakes) only gets juice if you have a brake controller sending it when actuated.

These two often get confused on RVs as 120 volt AC wiring white is neutral (ground) while black is line(Hot - don't touch). Also with 120 vol;t AC green is ground, whereas other colors are line (Hot).

----------------------

AC Current does not flow one way (current alernates in both directions), thus is not polarized like DC, which flows from positive (Red) to Negative (Black). The white is just as hot as the black wire. The green wire is an independant ground that if properly grounded on the other side, will help keep you from becoming a short to the ground if holding on side or the other - black or white.

With that being said, the reason for polarity on AC is to keep the power phases the same between devices and the flow constant. This is especially important on boats where different power levels can wreak havoc on metals. You can literaly watch a zinc (sacrifical metal) bubble when the boat next to you is not wired and/or grounded properly.

***********
Never, ever, ever, assume because white is considered nuetral in AC that you can touch either wire. If your grounding is bad, you can get shocked by either side no differently. Whereas in DC you can touch the ground all day long and never risk a shock.

***********

This brings me up to a couple of other important things that many people forget.

If you have a portable generator, GROUND IT per the instructions to the rig.

It is not a bad idea to keep a ground stake in your rig that you pound into the ground at the campsite or when parked for any length using the AC electrical. (May also help in a lightning stike)

Hoss, for every second you have the white and black wires on ya, you'll be killing thousands of brain cells. Slow down you might want to save just a few for later. ;D

Oh, yea, when you see that rattlesnake or coperhead, you might want to pick them up by the middle just to make sure. Be sure to blow in his face, they really like that.

Yes sir, you are a true smart Texan.
