Mods for towing & stack noise

Hi all,

I have a two part question for you experts.

First, me and Wifey have discussed adding some mods to the truck. I am planning on a good valve body for the 47re trans. and a power EZ. Is this a good combination for pulling our 5er (10K). The truck is a pulling machine stock so I can only imagine what it will do with a few mods. See sig, click on link.

Second, My wifes favorite color is chrome so she is showing some interest in stacks (as am I ) I would like to know just how loud stacks really are inside the cab with and without a muffler? I would hate to spend a few hundred bucks on stacks only to hear "that noise is giving me a headache!!!" (anyone married knows the drill). I do plan on leaving the resonator in, just not sure about the muffler since I do want some rumble.

Thanks

My experience with stacks was on a gasser. A very healthy 360 w/340heads in a 70 D150. With 18inch glasspacks it was way too loud cruising on the highway. Then again it had a 4.10 rear and no O/D. My stack tips were about 1 foot above the cab. I would think that with the tips about 3 feet above the cab it wouldn't be bad, but thats speculation on my part. It also won't fit in the garage . But it sure would look sharp. Good luck with whatever you decide. One more thing, if you install stacks, make sure you put heat shields on too. They get really hot and will melt or burn stuff that gets in contact with them (including skin). Rick

Do a search on "stacks" and "resonator" and "muffler"...there's a button at the top of the page. You'll find tons of past posts on it all. The stacks make it a little louder, but not much...just changes the kind of sound. And you'll hear the turbo more. Also, do a search on "silencer ring". That's a ring on the outer edge of one of the sides of the turbo (inlet or exhaust, I don't remember). Once you take that off you'll really hear your turbo whistle!

Dcwm,
You will have the same combo that I have w/o the stacks...and yes it's a great combo. I pull a 12,500 to 13,000 lbs 5er and I have no problems at all. Wondering if the stacks will get the front of the 5er dirty or not.

Big Dawg,

I have wondered about getting black from the exhaust on the front of the 5er, guess it wouldn't be any worse than those darn black streaks.

Can you tell me a little about the valve body you are using? Did you install yourself?

I did do a search but really didn't find what I was looking for, I appologize if this is terribly redundant.

Dcwm,
It's a DTT valve body and no I did not do it myself. The boys at DTT recommended a guy that was close to where I was living who did the work. Guess DTT has a list of folks who can do the work for you. Anyway, all I can say after the install is "Wow, what a difference in power". I had all my upgrades installed at the same time except the E brake, did that about 3 months later. I'd recommend DTT to anyone, but there are other aftermarket parts that are just as good. I like DTT for customer service and I have had no problems what so ever with there products (I'm not trying to start a war with other aftermarket parts).

I have stacks no muffler but w/resonater. Towing on the highway for a few
hours the noise gets anoying. Hmmmmmmmmmm
But driving around empty the noise is sweet.
I'm going to try rubber mounts at all points of atachment & see if that helps.

Well, sounds like I may just want to leave the resonator on and maybe stay with a muffler so the kids setting in the back can stand a 12 hour ride.....not to mention hearing about it from the shotgun position.

With what I've learned I have one more thing I'd like to know, Big Dawg I noticed that you have upgraded your torque converter along with the valve body upgrade. Guys is this a must do or can I just do the valve body now and later down the pike do the T.C. ?

Thanks a lot for helping me out y'all, if my money tree stays healthy I'll be doing this stuff fairly soon.

Check my gallery. I run 5" stacks and a Donaldson 40" muffler. Slightly louder than the DPPI in the cab but only on rare occasions and TONS BETTER when I'm hooked up to 10k plus. The deafening drone that I had towing with the DPPI system is totally gone! On a side note, I always run alone and I could see stacks getting on the loved ones nerves. There not for everyone...

Just my .02

God I love Stacks!!!

Gypsyman,

I had to stop looking at your gallery, I was making a mess drooling all over
myself.

I guess you like chrome as much as I do.

That is a very nice, clean looking stack job.

dcwm,

About your T.C. many people think it is the worse part of your tranny, and ofcourse that is arguable, but i think that if you are going to do mods you should do some searching and talk to many people about it before investing in your other mods. Please don't take this the wrong way it is only my .002.

Well, I'm far from being a transmission guy by any stretch of the imagination but from what I know so far there are clutch plates that lock together connected to the T.C. that require hydraulic pressure to lock the clutch plates together (simply put). If engine mods increase horse power and torque then the exsisting line pressure is no longer adequate and the plates can slip causing them to eventually burn up. If a good valve body increases the pressure and flow of fluid then am I not going to increase the life of my exsisting equipment (depending of course on just how much H.P. and torque is added). I am only looking for what ever an edge box will give me....35-40 H.P. approx.??? Does this sound accurate or am I way off?

Thanks for the advice Sharpmachine.....your right and I plan on knowing all about it before spending the green.

Thanks

dcwm,

You are correct the increased line psi can help! The direction that georand recommended to me if I wanted to upgrade mine was either a valve body and torque converter, or a triple disk T.C. alone, atleast that is with my old 94 with a target of 325 H.P.. Your 01 could be a diff. story. I recommend going to the 24v forum and asking this question again - hopefully I will see it cause I want to still learn more myself and talk myself into an upgrade real soon. just my .002
