Lifted 2500 5th wheel towing questions
I'm looking into about a 28-29' 5th wheel toyhauler. I want to lift my truck 4 inches which means using 2'' spacers in the rear and I want to run 35's which should raise the rear about 3 to 4 inches higher than stock. Im planning on running airbags to level the truck once the weight of the trailer is on it.
Am I going to have any trouble with clearance from the bottom of the trailer *(over the bed) to the bed rails? I've read at least 6 inches or more is reccomended.
Is there a standard height from the ground to the bottom of the 5er bedroom or do they vary by make and model?
and, I need to run a slider hitch with my shortbed right?
Thanks in advance for any info!

If your going to take the 5ver off road, you want 6 inchs of bed rail clearance. Plus you want the 5ver pretty level once loaded, need to balance out the weight on the trailer axles. You might have to do a lift on the 5ver to get it right. JMHO
I know all about what can happen if you dont have enough clearence between the bed rails. Back when I had my 5er non-toyhauler I went through some pretty rough terrain and crunch! So I had to flip the axels on my fifth wheel. My buddies with 5ers told me, as a rule if you are off-roading with it you should be able to put one fist on top of another for proper clearence. To avoid all that I traded my 28' 5er for a 26' bumper-pull toyhauler.
I pull my 5er with a 6" lift and 35's. Is it optimal--No. Can you make it work--YES. Every trailer is different in height. I was fortunate that mine sat pretty high from the factory. The trouble that I have now is that when I set the 5er down on the hitch the weight sets the truck down and the 5er is level but the truck sits a little nose high. It's not very bad but I notice it. If I put air bags on to level the truck out I will lose the clearance at the back of the bed and the trailer will sit nose high.
About 6" is the minimum clearance I would be satisfied with. Anything less and it won't take a very much of a dip and the two will touch. Plus that pesky little light that is under there complicates things.
Lastly, I strongly reccommend getting a superglide hitch. You will not be sorry you spent the extra$$ on it.
