I've had the craftsman and had no issues with it. Obviously, the closer to the object you take the reading, the more accurate it gets (I think about a foot away is the sweet spot). I've also used a few "more expensive" (Fluke, etc) models for checking brake temps on the aircraft I fly (they have to read to over 1000 deg C). Seems they were sturdier in construction, and had a wider level of temperature readings. But they were way more expensive, hundreds of dollars.... For the weekend warrior the Craftsman should do just fine...

Thanks I may go to Sears and look around. Just a quick check online looks like the cheapo would be about $79 ish. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...0466000P?mv=rr

Do you think $50.00 to my door for this one off of Ebay would be worth considering? http://cgi.ebay.com/Noncontact-Digit...3A1%7C294%3A50

You know, I want to say the Craftsman was very resonably priced when I got it, around the $50-60 marker, but I can't remember... It was most likely during the Craftsman days discount when I picked it up. I think it is the same one your looking at there.... And the other one looks OK as well, but I don't have any experience with that one (and have shyed away from Ebay after all the scams that have been going on!).

The second one I got at HF was a key fob size, no laser spot, and cost about $10.

Thanks guys for your input. I went ahead and ordered the one from ebay from the link above. For the price, it just sounds like it was a good deal for what I wanted it for.

Here's a picture of my $25 one. It even has a lighted display.

If I used the trailer brakes to stop, at leaast one is always warmer.
I use the old methods of hand & stick. I thump the tires and feel the tread & sidewall temps as well as the spindle hubs.

Well my infra red temp gun arrived a couple of days ago. Just like the one listed in this link. Seems to work great! So far so good. If anybody is shopping for one, it seems well worth the price of $50 to my door.

Got mine at Grainger a few years ago. Fits in my shirt pocket so that it is easy to keep at hand to make checks during the day.
