Idea's for hauling a Camaro home

So I have to haul my Camaro home from NH to OH in a few weeks. I thought I could rent a trailer, but it turns out I should just buy one for what it costs. Anyone have any other ideas on getting it down there? I kinda wanna buy one, but if I buy one I'd want to get a 8 wheel gooseneck, and I dont have the money for that.

For everyone saying to borrow one, I would, but my friends and family are in OH. I might just pay a buddy to drive up here, load it, and drive home.

I could drive it, but it has slicks and skinnies on it, I supposed as long as it didnt rain...

Not worth the ticket, plus you'll destroy the the slicks. Rent a trailer local, shouldn't be more than $50 day. It does get expensive renting for one way hauls.

Just buy a 16-18' car hauler trailer and sell it when you are finished. I'll cost less than renting and you can use it as long as you need before selling. Make sure that you get the new tire option.

What abought a U Haule car trailer or even a dolly. Just find some old rims and tires for the back of the car and remove the drive shaft. They cant cost that much to rent, especaly the 2 wheel dolly.

i would not put anything but a junker on a dolly..

just search the paper & forums & craigslist.org and postaroo.com

some redneck has a trailer hiding somewhere.

did you ask on your local camaro forum & camaroz28.com, and ls1tech.com?

should be someone on there looking to unload a trailer. would like to sell mine, but i think it is out of your way...

we used a U-haul trailer for a 3rd gen from VA to NE. no worries.

buy v6 rims & tires off the forum.
heck, i gave away seven 16 inch tires last week

buy a set of salad shooters, some used tires, be Ok.

Just get a U-haul car trailer. It's not that much at all. I have done it before and all was well. Rented it for the day. Drove down 2.5 hours to get my car and back 2.5 hours. No worries.

If you decide to buy a trailer Let me know I live in Rochester and know of at least 1 that is for sale. If you go that route let me know how much you are willing to spend I might be able to help you find one.

I will not put the car on a dolly, I did it once to move the car from my driveway to a buddy's shop about 2 miles away and it just doesnt work well with a Camaro.

The Uhaul rentals are not cheap to go 750 miles one way, and I'm not especially fond of their quality.

I found a few trailers on craigslist, it was my G/F's idea to buy one and then sell it afterwards. Not a bad idea, but then I started thinking about licensing, overweight, etc, it seems like it may be more of a hassle than I thought. I'll be checking on costs tomorrow.

I have no clue what weights I need to worry about. I think my SRW 1997 2500 is only rated at 16000. Which I am guessing the truck weights 7500 and leaves 8500 for the trailer and car right? The car weights roughly 35-3800, so that leaves 45-5000 for the trailer...am I calculating that right? I have a frame mounted reese hitch back there, not sure of the limits there either.

I found this trailer, which seems like a decent deal, but I am thinking it may weight too much. http://nh.craigslist.org/car/459697259.html Never used a pintle hitch, but it seems heavy duty, maybe too heavy duty?

Worse comes to worse, I'll find some salad shooters and drive the thing home. It'll be a fuel **** the whole way, but at least it's just one charge. I could pay a friend with a Duramax to bring a trailer up and drive back with me, but that seems like a big waste of time.

I'm going to have to rig up a lockup switch if I drive the Camaro home...man I dont want to do that. Pro Stars, Full Manual Valvebody, 4L80, non-Gore friendly 350..sigh

Any insight would be welcome.

I dont want to go over 1k or so for a trailer...thanks for the help though.

That is way overkill for a trailer. Look for a car trailer with a rating of around 7k (two 3500lb axles) that should be more than enough a trailer like that will weight around 1500 and you should be well within weights. I have put my 2500 on a trailer rated for 7k and hauled it 2 hours overwieght yes but its all I had and the trailer took the weight fine. Finding one for 1000 might be dificult without having to put in some work and parts. Ill keep my eys open for a trailer in that price range. How quickly you looking to move the car?

I am going home on Nov 17th. I dont NEED to move the car, but it's going to get stuck outside in some nasty weather and poor location [stolen or broken into]. I'd rather just take it home and leave it there till I move back.

How overkill is that trailer? Cause if I ever did keep it I'd like to be able to haul tractors for my grandpa since he's too old to haul them himself. I mean would the trailer itself put me over or what? Unfortunately I have no clue on trailers...yet.

Thanks.

That trailer you were looking at is probably rated for 9-12 ton In NH anything over 10k lbs you are required to have a class a cdl. Saying that I would try to stay under 10k for that reason if you dont plan on hauling. The trailer you are looking at would be perfect for hauling tractors ect I highly doupt with the trailer you are looking at you could even get your car onto it without rubbing the nose of it on the ramps and then high centering it as it makes the transition onto the flat section as it is an equipment trailer not a car trailer.

Hmm...

Seems like either paying my buddy who hauled the car up here the first time or finding some salad shooters and driving the bastard home.

So much more complicated than I wanted it to be. I thought that trailer would have been perfect. One trip home in the dark and then sit for 9 months. Maybe use transfer plates? Then I'll figure it out later if I want to keep it, use it for tractors, sell it, etc. Dang.

I just dont want to invest in a crap trailer that's going to sit for almost a year and I cant use it for anything but cars. Which I live in farm country, cars would be seldom used.

Id invest in a trailer like $1500 use it and then turn around and sell it when you get out to OH even if you take a couple hundred hit on it It would still be ahead in the long run vs paying someone to tow it back for you. I dont think you would even have to register it you could just get temp plates for the trailer and save some $. For 1000 you get what you pay for and from the sounds of it you have some money invested in the car why risk loosing it on a cheap trailer?
