Cool I bought my first RV today

Well, I pulled the trigger on a used Terry 28 foot 5vr this afternoon. Not the highest quality or the most amenities, but good enough for my immediate needs. I got a new job across the state and will be living out of the RV until I can get my house sold over here. Then the family and I can move to a new house, and use the RV for strictly pleasure!! I had a hard time finding a trailer in a cheap enough price range that also fits my truck! I put in the 5vr hitch tonight, and the RV place in Cedar Rapids did the Axle flipping for me so I can pull nice and level down the road. I think I might have enough clearance now to take the 5vr out to my favorite hunting spot!!

Yeah, that was part of it. The real story is my small budget and a 58" bed height. I found a couple of trailers I could afford, but they were 56" to the rails. The local shops do not flip axles and some of the trailers were already flipped, so they needed the sub frame assemblies fabricated, and I just don't have the coin for that right now. I don't know any other 5vr owners around here, and couldn't deliver the trailer to the welding shops for the work anyway!!

The trailer is pretty nice although not in top shape. Mainly cosmetics, but I always wonder about serious things if the cosmetics aren't up to snuff. My truck needs some work though! I had some nast vibration on the way home with her today. I had to fix a flat on an inside dual this morning (30 penny nail through the tread -- ) and didn't get my wheels spaced right on the hub. I also haven't towed a 5vr with my truck before. I ran about 62 mph, 950 to 1200 on the pre-turbo pyro, and anywhere from 10 to 26 lbs of boost on the gauge. I do not have a boost fooler on the truck, so I think some of my low power perception was computer aided defueling, but the temps and boost seemed high to me. The trailer was completely empty, coming home from the dealer. I don't think this trailer should be much of a match for my truck, especially in relatively flat Iowa, so I am stumped, a little disapointed, and somewhat embarassed. I think my IP is going -- threw the dreaded code last month, but haven't been driving it much. New IP and a tranny job and I will likely be in business. Now I just need to raise the $5000 to get it all done!

On flat ground, those EGTs sound a bit high to me, too. My truck is totally stock, and I might get up around 1200 pre-turbo floored on a long grade 6% or greater (at around 10k or a bit more).

It would be a good idea to pull the drums off, check out the brakes, repack w/synthetic grease and new seals...

As far as something serious being wrong, I think the two most expensive possibilities would be water leakage w/rot, and the refrigerator. Most everything else can be repaired reasonably.

I got into RVing about 6yrs ago. Many people who are also involved will vouch for this. Keep up with the routine maintenance or they can become a nightmare (money pit)! Keep the roof and associated caulking in good condition and keep an eye out for water leaks as they cause wood rot which inturn can render your unit worthless. They require a lot of TLC to keep them in good condtion as they are not constructed as soild as one might think. Yet, it's nothing like spending quality time with the family in one. Besafe in your travels and enjoy your new past time.
