Hot Shot - truck licensing ?

My son runs a small company and has a contract to deliver freight. He bought it from another guy who was doing it for 15 years or so. They're using Dodge diesels and car trailers to move the freight. My son applied for his DOT stuff because they told him it was easier than transfering the original owners numbers. Anyway, he got a call here last week and they want to come do a "Safety Inspection" . This got him asking some questions and one gal told him on the phone that he'd need to get his truck licensed for more weight. Enough to cover his highest GCVW. Can anyone confirm this ??? Seems kinda odd to me.
I wouldn't think he'd need to do that till his gross got to 26,001lbs
but perhaps I don't understand.......

I don't know what state your in, but in Tenn. you have to be licensed for combined weight. This is even for personal use. Normal plates have a weight rating in Tenn. of 9000 lbs. anything more you need different plates.

You don't say where you're located, but in Illinois you need to have plates rated for your trucks rated GVWR, the trailer needs one for it's max weight too.

Get above 8600lbs for the truck and you need safety inspections every 6mo.
