In California you will have to produce a bill of origination, or reciepts for the axles and materials. Usually you get the Bill of Origination from the axle vender.

We have a home built 16 footer

SO well built, the weak pt are are pathetic five lug axles taht my dad wont change out.... But we just registered it as a normal trailer, i dont know of anything else, but ill make sure and ask and edit this later.... Plate are 7 dollars a year for it too....

ON EDIT... What was needed to get it registered was the weight of the trailer from a weighing station, the carrying capacity, and proof that it was "inspected" by the weight station..

Tx

I registered a small utility trailer I made here in Calif and only had to take it to the DMV for inspection and a lite check. They also wanted to know its weight. They gave me a sticker vith a vin# on it to attach somewhere visible. Piece of cake.

Hum so if im building it out of scrap then? haha. Cleaning out the back of the acerage and decided well these axles and tubes have been here for about 6 years maybe we should use them. Had to change out some seals aand what not. but otherise all was good. Got the frame built and everything then though hum. Well i wonder how i register this dodad. Checked on the site and nothing and all day as i treid to call it said the offices are not open, the office hours are 8:30 am till 4:30 pm. Im like well its noon where are ya haha. Oh well

But yeah i figured ther would be a inspection. If they let everyone build a trailer :S id be scared. Also, anyone know of a good place to get some sheet aluminum? Or any other good ( and perferable ) cheeper ideas for an outside skin?

King, We really need to know what State you're in. The last one I built in Illinois 10+ years ago was out of an old truck bed. All I did was go to Sec of State office and told them I had built a homebuilt trailer. They registered it and issued me a serial number. They sent out a decal or you could affix your own number. Paid for License, and title. No inspection.

That sounds like the Liberal, cut throat crap calif would pull. But thats b.s. Just take your homegrown trailer down to the Ca.DMV and they give you a vin #. check for lights etc.

Best think to do is dont register anything in the state of Calif. They are greedy crook s.o.b's will rip you off!!

Here you have to have it weighed to determine registration fee, and a vin/safety inspection for a title to be issued as well. The title will say home built. Generally an owner applied number can be assigned as the new vin if I remember right.

Sorry guys, I thought that my lil thing on the left hand side said iowa. Anyway. Stopped by the DMV today. In Iowa you weight the trailer, if its under 2k lbs. Then they just give you the plates and registration. if its over 2 k then it needs to be inspected, which I dont know whats involved. and then the inpsector will give you the registration plates and title, which will cost 25 more bucks. So question for all of you with 20ft+ untility trailers, Whats an average trailer weight?

In Texas, you can register it as a farm trailer and bypass all of the inspections/weights. Plus its only $5/yr. Might be worth looking in to.

In Oregon if the gross loaded weight of a trailer is under 1800# you don't need a license or fenders (utility trailers..boat trailers etc.)......from the for what it's worth dept.
