Help me out with a Duramax question...

Over at RV.Net it is being said that the Duramax/Allison combination comes standard with engine braking. Here's a quote, "The new Allison six-speed automatic is also an outstanding piece of engineering, with a sensor that automatically applies engine braking on steep grades..."

Do the Chevys come with an engine (exhaust) brake standard that I don't know about or is the statement misleading. I am under the impression that the Allison simply downshifts on a grade as it deems necessary and that there is NO exhaust brake standard.

Some have come up with the idea that the Duramax turbos are being used for braking. Huhhhh????

Agreed. I've read lots about the Ally tranny and it's pretty clear what it does. Can't figure out where this stuff comes from other than folks wishing it were true. Kinda like Ford owning Cummins. NOT!

I was told by a friend that owned the duramax/allison that when going down a hill you could tap your brakes and the trans would sense that somehow and downshift to help you slow down. Dont know exactly how or why but thats what iv been told and never had any reason to doupt it.

When you brake they down shift big time, it'll throw you forward if you aren't ready for it. I wouldn't call it a ebrake though. I do believe that the towhaul must be on for that to happen.

'Tis true, but only when the transmission is in the Tow/Haul mode.

"When you brake they down shift big time, it'll throw you forward if you aren't ready for it. I wouldn't call it a ebrake though. I do believe that the towhaul must be on for that to happen."

This is correct, there is no Ebrake whatsoever on the Duramax/Allison.
