Heavy Towing, Hot EGT's

So I finally got my guages installed only to realize that while towing my goose with two jeeps on the back the EGT's get way hotter than I ever thought possible. I have read and been told by many that if I keep the RPM's above 2000 and the truck is bone stock, I shouldn't have any problems. Well, I have had no problem on some of the hills in PA getting the EGT's above 1200 and almost to 1400 for short bursts. What gives??? The probe is mounted pre turbo in the manifold in the cavity of the rear 3 cylinders. As stated earlier, I have no mods and I always shift when it gets around 2000 RPMs. I'm about to take a trip to Moab, UT and have been told there are some nice 8-9 percent grades on this trip. Just want to make sure I'm not going to have any problems. Any help is appreciated.

Momentary spurts at 1400* won't hurt anything.

I would suggest a free flowing (or NO) muffler, and an after market air intake. Both of these will help keep things moving and decrease EGT's.

On my 06 the egts are hotter when stock. If I turn the TST on 1/1 the egts go down about 75. I run the TST on 2/2 it is almost impossable to hit 1350 on a hill with 17 1500 pound cows in the trailer.

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead and ordered a muffler delete and will definetly have it in before the trip. Also, hopefully in the future I will end up with some kind of box either TST, Smarty or Edge to help lower the EGT's some more.

PJ, I know you mentioned the intake. How effective is this in dropping egts. At $300+ I would think I would be better off going for the box before the intake to lower EGT's. Are the factory intakes that restrictive???

I did my muffler delete before the gauges, so I didn't have a baseline to go on. I imagine it has to be better than the stock monster of a muffler for letting out the hot gasses.
I wouldn't call the factory box "that" restrictive, just more restrictive than others.
You can get a better flowing intake for MUCH less than $300+. You can get a n S & B intake on Ebay for about $190. I just happened to see them there again today, Buy it now with a Best Offer option. (USE THE BEST OFFER, Low ball them).

I think I paid $186 shipped for mine.

Oh, if you do decide to look at those intakes on Ebay, be careful, one is FREE shipping @ $189.00 the other is not. (the best offer one, your offer would have to be below $170 to make sense).

Welllllllllll.

Seat of the pants meter? Of course!

The muffler delete alone is going to have you rolling down your passenger window every time you get near a building or underpass. The intake will let you hear the turbo as it was intended to be heard.

As far as raw numbers, probably very little gain (some will say none). I just did those two things cause I felt like they were a good foundation for future mods (Smarty, etc).

I agree, if it were a matter of dropping $300 dollars, I would still be running the stock box, tube and filter.

You might also look into the "Whistler" intake, conjured up by a member here. It looks pretty cool too.

Look here:

I like it. Maybe I should forget the box and the intake and just save for the turbo. Now the wheels are turning.

Moab huh you ever been there? I pulled a 42ft trailer and race truck to Seattle 2 weeks ago and one perticular hill I decided to see how I could pull it 6th gear, it was a 5 to 6 mile straight climb at 7 to 8 percent grade. I ripped up it at 80 mph 2400 rpm's and just over 1200 degrees.

Didn't want to cough up 3 bills for an intake, Chris has him refinancing the house for a set of twins.
