Gooseneck help
Gooseneck help
I just bought a used 35' trailer and found a major flaw in it. The coupler has been cut down and made non adjustable which makes the trailer hit the bed sides when turning. The diameter of the coupler on there is approx "5 round and all I can find is 4.5" couplers. I thought about making an elevated hitch but I think it may break. Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?
Are you measuring inside or outside diameter? If a Bulldog coupler just flat out won't work, I would look for a reliable welding shop and just have the old one cut out and get all new put back in. IMO, should be less than $500.00 and problem solved.

I think what you are measuring is the standard O.D. of 4" pipe. I think a weld shop could cut it, bevel and do a full penetration weld on an extension.
Even if a new coupler is not the same size as long as it can but up against the existing pipe cut off without a gap then it can be welded.
The key here is to find a good trailer shop and they will know what to do and how to weld it. I doubt a reinforcing collar would be needed but a good shop would know that too.
Having had goosenecks I would want the height adjustability restored on the trailer so any truck could tow it and it can be leveled properly.
Raising the hitch is a bad idea. The trailer neck has much more beef to work with.
If you are not using an extended ball on the hitch then you might get another 2 inches of height by switching *****.

[QUOTE=d22019;2913643]I went out and measured again and the neck is about 4 1/2 -3/4. Can I just cut the coupler off the bottom of it and slide in a new coupler and call it good?[/QUOTE
If the tube lengths are correct, sure sounds like it would work. Don't forget the inner tube needs to be pinned or fastened to the outer tube. I'm guessing the previous owner wasn't using a p/u to move this trailer.
