Going to the Grand Canyon

Hey guys,
I'm planning a trip to the GC in a couple weeks. We are coming from Palm Coast FL and have planned on 4 days travel time to get there. 2060 miles one way. Anyone have suggestions on what to do in the area. We are staying in the trailer village at the south rim. Also, are there any cool places in the area where you can use the 4x4.

Yeah, the place is crawling with elk. We almost hit one leaving very early in the morning on our way home last summer. From what little I saw of the south rim camping area it did not look all that great. Maybe check into that Show Low area...

Give Aunt Edna her meds.
Ellen: "I honestly don't think you're gonna find the Grand Canyon on this road."
Clark: "Jesus - it's only the biggest god **** hole in the World!"
Aunt Edna: "Clark watch your language!"
Clark: "Make that the second biggest."

I don't like to drive 500 miles a day in a car, let alone hauling a fiver. You are looking at a solid 8-10 hours on the road, then setting up the rig. Does not sound like fun. It is getting to be Summer in the desert, temps will be 100 +, and mid 90's along the Gulf. Make sure your truck has it's AC and fluids in order. Trailer tires should be less than 4 years old.
How long is your trip?
If it is 2 weeks, this may be more of a sentence.

Be careful out there....... I tried to find the Grand Canyon one year and almost drove in a HUGE hole in the ground out there several times I finally decided it wasn't worth falling in that big pit and gave up looking for it.

Grand Canyon's great! Have you thought of swinging north on the way home to stop at Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Arches? All near Moab...my favorite place in the world to use four wheel drive!!! Could take I 70 back east.

Show Low is clear across the state from the canyon. If I was you, I would camp in the rv park owned by the GCRR and take the train up to the canyon.

This is a real blast. It really cool for the kids if ya have any. Along the rout some guys ride up on horseback and rob the train. Get a seat in the bar car and get toasted on the way up.
Don't feed the elk..

Drop down into Sedona while you are here. It's worth it.

Enjoy AZ

Thanks for the tips guys. I will post some pics when I return. To answer some of the questions, I can actually do a complete set-up of the rig in less than 10 minutes. (Thats from pulling into the site to cooking dinner). We have extensively traveled east of the mississippi and I try to keep my driving time to under 8 1/2 hrs per day because we travel with our children, ages 2,9,16, and 17. We did Vermont ,Newhampshire and Maine last summer (4370 miles) in 3 weeks . It was crazy awesome. As far as Arizona goes, I have had many people tell me about the GC train and that sounds really cool. I was also told to see Sedona and someplace else that I can't remember right now. My boys and I avid hikers and we will be hiking from the rim to the river. A rafting trip is a definite possibility also. And finally i hope I see some serious elk , but not stuck to the front of the truck. Thanks guys!
