Getting psyched for a 6000 mile trip pulling 6000# trailer!
Well I just picked up my Kaufman single car hauler. It weighs 2000# empty and I'll be driving up to Toronto from NYC to pick up a friend and load his Blazer on it, heading down to Arizona... leaving Phoenix with a NJ bound Ford Focus and making a LONG (1000 mile) detour to visit Montana and then shooting home via I90 -> I94 -> I80.
Got my satellite radio and CB set up... tools, check, cooler, check, digital camera, check...
We'll see how the SO slushbox handles the Rockies.
So basically my vacation is driving all over the country visiting amazing places...and I am even getting paid for it

Got yer chains and winter supplies? Weather was nasty in the Rockies yesterday. http://vortex.plymouth.edu/

WOW. Yes, it is. I am back. I broke loose at 75MPH over an icy bridge. Trailer and truck swayed back and forth for about quarter of a mile
The ice came on out of no where... and then came the snow, etc. etc. If I did not have 4WD I don't think I would've made it out of there.

The kind of road you can safely do 80mph on with a trailer

Not sure where this was... maybe Nevada or Idaho

Leaving Bozeman, MT very pretty

This is what happens when youre trying to tow a trailer in the Mountains with ice everywhere... I had fun going 25MPH for literally 300 miles haha

The pic of bozeman looks like you are just east of bozeman, eastbound. Just entering the pass?
I grew up over there. Its pretty country, but can be very unforgiving.

It's not for the weak hearted nor the weak kneed. Bozeman Pass like Homestake can be nasty and the DOT doesn't generally plow on weekends, so your left out there in the cold so to speak. You get thru however you can. I've driven those passes numerous times and I hate 'em. I avoid them and 4th of July Pass if at all possible.
I'd rather drive up and over US-89/US-2 than those three passes.

I came up US 191 from US 20 through Idaho... that was pretty fun too
I'm not sure what that pass is called. You know, induchman, I didn't bring chains and I don't know what I was thinking. Do people usually run chains on 4 wheels or just 2? If I had left a day later and I might've been stranded (not that I would complain about being stranded there!). I actually ended up making a U-turn on I-90 and took I-25 south to 80 West to Cheyenne when I heard there was snow and ice all the way from Sheridan to Rapid City and possibly further.
I ended up pulling over a rest area smack in the middle of no where (north of Casper south of Gillette I think) and passing out under the stars. Gotta love that.
Unfortunately I didnt get to stay long in MT but I hung out with some MSU students and graduates at some bar across the street from my motel and had a good old time. I talked to this one kid a lot about moving out there and I think it's one of those things that I'll really never know if I'll enjoy it unless I just DO it.
Coming home I swear it was more and more depressing the further east I got the more swarms of idiots that were on the road. I nearly didn't have to touch my brakes from Wyoming to PA 1000 miles. Then once I hit NJ I had to slam on them due to some idiot in the hammer lane who was trying to make his right side exit that he had already passed!
(I'm getting off topic!)

Hey njoverkill, forget the snow, Phoenix is low to mid 70's and blue skies for the next couple of weeks
once you get here you wont want to leave, till next May when the mercury starts to peg out well above the century mark for that many days.
Anyways, be careful pulling on ice and snow, almost isn't worth the stress.

Road-tripping in the winter, carry a shovel. NOTHING improves snow drivability like 2000# of wet snow in the bed.

Ya know? It's the simple solutions that many times elude us when looking for a simple answer. And this is one of those cases where the obvious solution to many of my winter "problems" was right there. Sheesh! :-[
