Freightliner layoff - Cleveland, NC

A friend of mine just got laid off notice from the Freightliner big truck plant in Cleveland, NC. 1200-1500 laid off due to poor sales. They are introducing a new P3 model that is cheaper truck to offset the higher cost of engine. Go figure. They have acres of trucks just sitting around in neighborhood lots.

ALL the heavy truck manufacturers are having to lay people off . Fleets bought all the 2006 trucks they could to avoid paying thousands more for 2007 trucks with particulate filters .

Yup. That's exactly right. Heard on the local news last night that Portland Freightliner is dropping from building 74 trucks a day to about 2 dozen. I drive part time for a local fleet around here that bought 100 new Macks just for that very reason. Had a drivers meeting about 3 weeks ago and we were told to not be looking for any new trucks for quite some time now. Said the only new trucks to the fleet might be some good used low mile ones they can find around the country.
