First time trailer brake use???????

Bought a new 20 ft enclosed trailer for my move to Ga from Az. Hooked up all the wires and brakes and tried out the controller. When I slide the controller it doenst feel like any brakes are being applied. The color on the light goes from green to light red as the controller is slid. As the brakes on the truck are applied the light on the controller changes colors the same way. Are my brakes working? Does there need to be a load in the trailer to get a good feel for the trailer brakes? First time trailer brake use and need some help. Thanks

You should be able to feel something.

You might try driving a little with the trailer connector unplugged, even stopping once like that would give you a reference point for how no brakes feels.

Make sure you have the wires connected right (function, not color)

And what kind of controller is it? That might help, esp. if some of us have the same kind.

My 3000lb flatbed can lock up the front axle tires going 0-30mph empty. Loaded it has to try harder but it can stop the truck with good braking force applied to it. If its new take it back to the dealer and tell them to sort it out, if not then somethings missing or the wires are crossed b/c your getting a closed circuit indicator with the light turning to red.

Look for a "gain" adjustment wheel/****/screw.

WHen I put mine in I was told to drive about 25 mph and set the trailer brakes to lock up when applied, then back off until they drug hard. Once a load is on the trailer the brakes should be close.

The unit was on the truck when I bought it. I will have to look at what brand it is. I do know that the plug on my truck is pretty busted up, but I have power to all lights and they all function. I will also look for a gain adjustment. Would that be on the back or the bottom? I had a brake controller in a old Chevy that would turn the truck brake lights on if I pulled the slide even without a trailer. This one has no power unless the trailer is hooked up. Thanks for the help and I will get back with more info about brands and gain adjustment.

The adjuster can be in the front, on the bottom or on the sides. Look around for it sound like you need to turn it up some.
Also how long has the trailer been sitting? If the rotors are rusted from sitting you need to drive a little to get the rust off by applying the brakes.

The controller is a Tekonsha Voyager. It does have a dial on it but does not indicate which way you turn it has what effect, I will have to play with it. The trailer has drum brakes not rotors if that matters. Thanks and I hope someone has had one of these controllers.

So what was the problem?? I had a problem that when I would try to increase the brake voltage, it would sometimes goto 0 and I would lose the trailer brakes. When I installed he new Ptunam hitch, I saw the previous owner had Scotchlocks on all the wires to run a connector up to the bed for a 5th wheel. I cut every wire, soldered and shrink wrapped the repairs. After that the brake controller quit going to zero while trying to adjust the brakes.

I had the Voyager. It's pretty tricky to set up but once you do it works pretty good. My next controller will be a Jordan.

Im moving to the Atlanta area in August. Im from central Tx so I have an idea about the humidity. I have not set up the Voyager yet as it is tricky. Will do before next pull of course. Thanks for the info.
