First long tow with my new CTD
First long tow with my new CTD
Well here we go. After work today I will hook up the camper and take a nap...we are leaving tonight around 2;00am heading to VA. This will be the first long tow with my new CTD. My Hemi was ok but would not pull the hill like I would have liked. I hooked my camper up to the CTD but only went about 20 miles. We are going with another couple who just bought a Ford 350 6.0liter....LOL I guess I will have to give him a run! It might be a little unfair as I am towing just over 6000lbs and he is towing just over 9000lbs.
When you get back from your trip, please post the pictures of you pulling your buddies broken down 6.0 and his trailer home after it quit running and nobody knows how to fix it, including dealerships. lol
Traded my 6.0 for a CTD at 44000 miles after braking down 5 times (side of the road). The straw that broke the camels back was the 5 time it overheated and started vibrating and blowing a ton of smoke and steam out the exhaust, I took it to the dealer the next day and they kept it all afternoon and couldnt find anything wrong with it. New CTD 75400 miles no problems.

Well I got back on Sunday from my trip to VA. This was the first trip I have towed the camper with the new CTD. What a difference this truck is compared to my 03 Hemi..... I got between 12 - 13.5 mpg towing around 6500lbs. My truck is an 05 2500 QC 4X4 CTD w/3:73 rears with 2200miles on the odometer. The only thing I wasn't happy with was that my buddy and his Ford 05 Superduty 6.0 got 1mpg better than me towing his 9000lb 5th wheel!!!!! Whats up with that?!?!?! After we got down there and unhooked we did some light to light running while sight seeing and I am a bit quicker.

ive heard of some gettin 10MPG with crewcab duallies.... And like it has been stated, once ur ram breaks in a lil more, ur mileage will improve.. Sure is a beautiful thing with all that tq u have tho isnt it? Enjoy your new truck..

I hate to burst anyone's bubbles here, but the reason the Ford got better mileage (and I'm not surprised) is because they have taller gearing. A friend of mine has a Ford 6.0, and at 80 he is turning about the same RPM as I am @ 70 mph. He gets worse mileage than I do because he pulls a gooseneck vs. my open car trailer, but if I try and run with him, my mileage gets down to around 13.5 and he gets 11-11.5. If I run 70-ish I get 14.5 in hilly stuff and 16 on flat ground.
RPM uses fuel, and we are geared deeper. Good for pulling a lot of weight, but also burns more fuel too.
