Question Fifth wheels ???

I pull a Golden Falcon trailer, its the tour edition and my hitch will only rock front to back. I was thinking of replacing it with a style that would allow some side tilt. I have only towed a few years and have drove big rigs for a few years. I just have to know if or what type of hitch is better. I will have rear air ride installed soon so my truck don`t sit down in the back. I would love to hear more on hitches. Thanks Guys Don T

The fifth wheel hitches that rock fore and aft and side to side are nice. Been running one since 2003. You don't feel it pulling on the truck to the side when turning. Just make sure you've got six inches between the fiver and the bed ralls. I've only hit the bed rails once. Going into a Camp Ground off 495 around Boston where the turn was to the right and down to the left. The road was slopped to the down side to the left. Caught the bed rail on the right side of the truck.

I went with the Air Safe air hitch. The whole kingpin rides on air in all directions - - up, down, fore, aft, and side to side. It has no pivot point so all movement that is transfered back and forth is dampened. Single or dual air bag hitches cannot do that - - they have a pivot. It dramatically improves the ride in the truck, reduces impact to the frame of the fiver and improves the ride inside the fiver to the contents.

I had major failure in my kingpin framing due to the impact and went with the air hitch after repairs at the urging of the repair facility.

Fiver,
I am stuck with my 5th wheel hitch and can't change (have a B&W GN hitch with the Colibert RailRider, the Colibert goes into the slot where the GN ball would normally go). Hitch pulls fine, but I think at times the ride could be a bit smoother. Bumps can cause a little "herky-jerkiness" (to be non-technical) I have never towed with any other type of fifth wheel hitch, so I have no comparison. Do you think upgrading just my pin box to the Air Ride Pin Box would give me a bit more compliant ride?

Thanks,
~Rob (I will ask you opinion about brake controllers later )

Pull Rite makes a solid hitch. It has rails that bolt into the frame. The hitch can come out, if needed.

I preferred the feel of the 2 way but I had to go to a 4 way to get unhitched on really uneven ground - when the 5er was on more than 2 planks to make it level and the truck was still on the slope. Craig

That's the problem I'm having. My 2 way sure binds when the truck and trailer are the least bit uneven.

The air pin, from all I have read, does improve ride and help some with the herky/jerkies. I have the MORryde rubber cushioned pin box which did wonders in helping that situation, but I still had some. In your case, I think I would consider the air pinbox.

Brake controllers - - either Brakesmart or Hensely - - nothing else.

i am running just a 4 way 15k reese. very smooth on the bumps etc. also makes it very easy to unhook as everyone else has mentioned.

as costal dave said- clearance is a must. i have 6.75 between mine and have already bumped once on a road heading into the inlaws camp. i knew it was going to hit as soon as i started up but luckily it just hit the light cord nice and easy and started to level out. in my eyes the more clearance the better, as long as everything is running level. that experience was enough for me. im flipping the springs on my axles very soon and adjusting both my goose neck and the hitch to provide the most clearance. replacing the box on my truck is not to high on my list of things to do right now. just my $.02

Guys I installed air bags on the rear of the truck and run 30 psi in them towing.I bought the system with the compressor and love it. I can dump the air when i`an getting read to pull away from the fiver and I get a much smother ride.Getting connected is much easier now because I can add air for lift or dump air.

Who makes theses hitches x3,x4 ?
