Enclosed trailer pricing..

Anyone have and feedback on this. I want to either purchase or if if possible rent an enclosed trailer for about three months. I'm moving my personals. Furniture, tools, ATV, power tools etc. Live in N.Y. and going to Texas. Any ideas where to start poking around. I would like to buy one outright if its not too expensive...how do these hold up if I were to buy one used privately.

thanks

Rental pricing on an 8' x 20' is ridiculous. I wouldn't even think about renting one.

I bought the one in my gallery last January, used it to haul our toys to the Oregon coast, stayed there for two months, then loaded up an old '71 GM pickup, and a bunch of junk from my dads place and headed home. I took the long way home down the California coast and across I-40. I think I put about 6000 miles on it. When I got home I didn't have a need for it anymore so I put it on eBay and got exactly what I paid for it.

Pricing can range from mild to wild. It all depends on what you spec it for. You can buy the cookie cutter units that most trailer dealers have on the lot for about $4K, but if you want something specific you could easily spend upwards of $10K. I just bought another tag with a GVWR of 14K lbs. and I wish it only cost $10K.

trailer

just looked at pics. I saw a open bed trailer and then the enclosed one. How much did that enclosed one cost you? You said you got a pick up inside that enclosed one?

How did that enclosed one feel loaded up as a tag along.

Trailers hold their value very well. Just buy one and then sell it when you're done if you don't need it after the move. If you're moving because of a job the cost of moving is tax deductible. Keep the trailer and let Uncle Sam pay for 20-30% of it.

Be sure you get MORE trailer than what you need.

I have a friend that just had an enclosed trailer built, loaded it up & the axles & springs bent under the excessive weight.

I talked to the builder & he said it's easy to overload an enclosed trailer because you can stack stuff to the ceiling, front to back. Normally on an open trailer, if you start stacking stuff, it will fall off if you go to high.

When I moved from Detroit to Phoenix, back in 1976, I bought a new 12' Wells Cargo enclosed trailer. When I got to Phoenix, the trailer acted as a storage unit til I found a building for my business. When I sold the trailer, I repainted the interior, to freshen it up, & a band bought it. I actually made a few bucks on that trailer. Never expected that to happen.

Buffalo's advice was great, better to have a trailer over built for what you think you will do with it than find out the hard way it should have been beefier.

Ahh, the old water wagon is what you saw in that 1st picture. I didn't even consider that as a real trailer although it did weigh every bit of 8K when full.

The enclosed wagon was an R & R Aluminum Trailer. I think before tax it was $8800 and it was a 10K GVW unit. It rode fine with the old pickup in the back. The truck weighed around 5K and the wagon empty was just under 4K.

Just as everyone has said above, overspec!

Stacks of trailers available on eBay. Maybe you can buy one there and resell it there when you are finished with it.

I bought mine on racingjunk.com - lots of classifieds added daily. And when you are done, sell it.

Do some research about trailers....most come with just 3500 lb axles - make sure you won't be loading it that much. Name brand will also be easier to sell in my opinion.

I bought a used 33 x7x6.5 foot 18k#trailer fifth wheel for $5k a 38x 8x 7.5 foot 21k# gooseneck for $7k and finally a 48 x 8 x 8 foot 26k# for $20k.

make sure the tires hubs brakes are in good shape and it is inspected otherwise you can spend a couple grand replacing stuff pretty quick. Make sure the tires match the axle rating. Good Luck. ks
